Rationale: Design Matters

I chose this primary source image of a washoku bento box to best represent the concept of achieving “harmony in design” using elements that are carefully “chosen and arranged visually to be in balance and harmony from the point of view of the customer”(Reynolds 7) – in this case, from the POV of the audience. Each element should have a distinct purpose to communicate an idea or message to the viewer when presenting a digital presentation. Our experiences will dictate how we emotionally receive this message; however, it is ultimately up to the designer/creator to make meaning for our audience. This washoku platter makes perfect use of space, integrating essential colors and textures into a unified whole. In the same way, one’s visual design and choices matter, and designers should approach their work as a master craftsperson should.

My research and project idea is focused around sharks and the fear of sharks that most humans seem to share. This photo was taken after the 1916 shark attacks, which was the first major shark attack recorded in U.S. history. This series of attacks terrified the nation and sparked a local hunt for the shark responsible.

People are so fast to let fear control their actions. The people at the Jersey shore were afraid of this shark so they decided to take its life. This was a cruel and unnecessary action. This shark was living in its natural habitat and we as humans can not expect an animal to behave a certain way just because we are close to it.

J.I. Rodale moved from Brooklyn, NY to Emmaus, PA after suffering from poor health for his entire childhood. (Ferris, Para. 7)

He planted 60 acres of various fruits and vegetables using “organic” farming methods, which in the 1940’s referred to farming without pesticides, antibiotics on livestock, and minimal mechanization. In 1942, he published his first issue of Organic Farming and Gardening, a magazine where he preached the benefits of this style of agriculture, the slogan of which was “Healthy soil, healthy food, healthy people.” (Ferris, Para. 9.)

Rationale: Early Implementation of BME

Even though BME was not an official science until the 20th century, certain aspects of it have been in use for hundreds of years, such as prosthesis. This hand, thought to be owned by Gotz von Berlichingen, is one of the earliest known uses of a proper prosthetic limb (Larson para. 5). This allowed Berlichingen, aka Gotz of the Iron Hand, to continue his life as a German knight, adventurer, and mercenary, even after losing his limb. Gotz would go on to buy a castle in which he would live the rest of his life in. This is just one example of how BME can allow people to carry on with their lives even with a life-altering injury. While this hand may be archaic by today's standards, its existence allowed a man to carry out a fulfilling life.

Leo Dean

This French map from 1915 (one year into the first world war), symbolically depicts the european continent through symbols. This is a perfect example of semiotics, where the artist is depicting a message without words, and instead through symbols. Not all of these symbols are friendly, some are even racist and derogatory, with somewhat obvious differences in countries’ depictions depending on the artist’s opinion. For example, the UK is a boat to depit the might of its navy, and Italy is a boy playing an instrument to show their artistic culture. At the same time countries like Spain and Greece are given exaggerated caricatures of their residents. These visuals are meant to create ideas about different countries in the viewer’s mind and influence their opinion on those groups.

Titled “The vintage season Zikh’ron Ya’aqov”, this photo was taken on July 24th, 1939 in Israel. In the photo, workers are gathered around another to hear a story. Nowadays, storytelling can mean anything from physical novels to things you watch like film and play to even things you listen to like audiobooks and podcasts but back in early human times, storytelling was drawn on walls of caves and passed down orally from generation to generation. While this photo is close to our time than ancient human time, it shows how even as storytelling has adapted and changed through the years, oral storytelling, the oldest form of storytelling, is still around.

Before really explaining the graph, The theory behind it is a notable reason why this is interesting. The “Extreme Male Brain Theory” is based off phycology, specifically the differences in male systematic brains and the more empathetic female brains. The extreme male brain theory claims that autism is when a brain is “Extremely Male”, or lacking in empathy. This holds true when examining an autistic person's lifestyle. A common theme in an autistic kids childhood is repetitive and monotonous play. And people with autism often develop routines in their day-to-day life, such as exclusively eating specific meals prepared in the same way every time.

This graph was made using data from a test by Simon Baron-Cohen, a professor at Cambridge University. The test Valued and scored the test takers ability to systematize, and empathize. The participants scores were graphed here. The shaded regions show 5 levels of empathy and systemenmtry. Type E being empathy, and type S being systematic. And type B is in between.

As you can see, Men and Women score pretty evenly in between, with more women fell into type E, and more men fell into type S. However, we can see that autistic people commonly fall into type S & Extreme type S, only rarely do we see an result from an autistic person that is in between. This graph supports the “Extreme Male Brain Theory” because it shows that autistic people struggle with empathy.

This image depicts a lady traveling throughout the globe. As you can see in the top right she has visited many monuments and famous landmarks which all literally blend in together in this depiction. This depiction comes from what they call a “hurried tour around the world.” The lady is reminded of many construction projects going on in her home country. The scarecrow in the middle of the art is particularly interesting as it represents a US customs worker. I interpret this as a way of saying that traveling is easy. the only thing blocking you is a measly scarecrow which only scares off the gullible. It can be seen as a forbidden fruit but the benefits as we see in this art are practically infinite. The lady sits on a beach looking out at the ocean with many different signs that have names of the most famous seas. This can definitely mean that once your seen one sea you’ve seen them all but that might not always be the exact case. A different lady takes off a uniform relieved that the tourists left. This points to the more destructive side of traveling and the unreal expectation and stereotypes people have about countries particularly here with their native dress.

I like this image because it really shows both sides of the coin. There are a lot of underlying meanings and I do like how both the positive and negative aspects of travel are addressed in this.

This picture was published 6 days ago, March 10, 2023. This represents stock market numbers.

A stock market is a physical or digital place where investors can buy and sell stocks, and or shares, in publicly traded companies. The price of each share is driven by supply and demand, as well as investor sentiment, and domestic and global economic trends. The more demand in a certain niche could let an investor know what shares to buy.

The more people want to buy shares, the higher the price goes. Less demand, and the price of a share or stock drops. Stock markets now exist in most countries, but the first appeared in 17th-century Amsterdam where the stock market began.

I chose this picture because is represents my business research. Business and finance is the heart of stocks and they all connect. I think the message that stocks can send a lot of people is that business is the soul of the world then and now. Everywhere you look it is numbers in business.

Alex Green

This print is a pro American expansionism propaganda piece in the late 19 century. It depicts Uncle Sam as a teacher with his new students who are “uncivilized” and need to be taught what to do by Uncle Sam. His new students who are labeled "Cuba, Porto Rico, Hawaii, Philippines"; they do not look happy to be there as this was just after the end of the Spanish-American War. At the rear of the classroom are students holding books labeled "California, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska." These are the already existing states and are shown to be the most civilized of all the students. At the far left, an African American boy cleans the windows, and in the background, a Native boy sits by himself, reading an upside-down book labeled "ABC” which is to depict them as non intelligent, and a Chinese boy stands just outside the door depicting them trying to get inside. A book on Uncle Sam's desk is titled "U.S. First Lessons in Self-Government" as that was the goal for the new “students”.

I chose this print as it showed a very common reason given by nations practicing imperialism to why it was and is necessary for them to do so.
