Brief History

 

 

 

 

Measure W Bond passed on November 3, 2020

    • To support the improvement of WJUSD school facilities

July of 2021 (AB 22) state legislation was enacted

    • Mandating the expansion of Transitional Kindergarten (TK).
      • to serve all 4 year olds by the 2025/26 school year.

Measure W bond funds were prioritized for a new WES TK/Kindergarten Facility

    • To serve the incoming students

Assembly Bill 130 - California Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten and Full Day Kindergarten Facility Grant Program��

  • Shortly thereafter, AB 130 was enacted
    • Provided one-time grants for construction of new classrooms or the retrofitting of existing facilities for the purpose of preschool, transitional kindergarten (TK) or full-day kindergarten (FDK) instruction. 
      • To meet the grant requirements California Department of Education Title V classroom standards are required to be used:
        • 1,350 square feet classrooms,
        • Dedicated restrooms, 
        • and adjacent play areas.
      • WJUSD submitted an application for the grant in the spring of 2022
        • WJUSD was not awarded the first round of grants
      • A second funding round begins February 1, 2023

Bond planning committee meetings and community input

  • All Measure W bond funds would be prioritized for the new WES TK/Kindergarten Facility
  • Demographic Study was not accurate for current TK enrollment
  • Variety of other facilities needs (Kitchens, WES existing facilities, preschool, etc.)
  • Identifying additional funding sources, including the second round Preschool, Transitional-Kindergarten, Full-Day Kindergarten Facility Grant Program to supplement facility needs
  • Planning around housing students generated by future development growth
  • Existing Facilities Master Plan out of date
