Things to consider-good fit academically?

  • Responsibility, good time management, self-starter, independent learning style, maturity

  • Your grade in the college classes are on your high school AND college transcripts & 1 typical class at college = 3 credits at RHS

  • You are enrolled in two schools and the high school can’t help you with and does not have access to your college classes

  • Transferring credits to another college is not guaranteed and is dependent upon the transfer rules of each college - you need to know this information

  • If you withdraw from a college class you get an F on your high school transcript

  • No honors designation!

Things to consider - good fit personally?

  • You can choose, part time or full time
    • If part time, what classes will you keep at the high school?

  • Colleges consider you a college student- not a HS student

  • Two different calendars - trimesters and semesters

  • What will you miss in your high school experience?

  • Once you get to college will you be ready to choose a major faster because you will be done with more generals?

  • No transportation provided

Important to note:

If a student withdraws from a college class, colleges may give a “W” withdrawal grade (depending on date of withdrawal) but at the High School it is a grade of “F” on the high school transcript.

Another important note:

What Classes to Take

(10th grade)?

PSEO for 10th Graders to take Career & Technical Education (CTE) courses

Legislation allows eligible 10th-grade students to enroll initially in one Career and Technical Education (CTE) course through PSEO. If the student earns a “C” or higher grade in this first course, she/he is eligible to take additional CTE courses while in 10th grade. In order to be eligible, a 10th-grade student must have met the proficiency level of “meets or exceeds” on the 8th-grade MCA reading test. If the student did not take the MCA, another reading assessment accepted by the enrolling postsecondary institution can be substituted.

Contact DCTC or Inver Hills for additional information about qualifications and course options

  • Students can choose to take any electives or required classes allowed by the college through PSEO. Students are still required to take similar types of REQUIRED courses if choosing to take these courses through PSEO.

  • Still must meet all graduation requirements - Must take an Econ class senior year for example and meet the credit requirements for all subject areas.

  • Students must have at least one open period at RHS each trimester to take 1 or more PSEO classes (students may not be full time at RHS plus PSEO)

  • Don’t overbook yourself! Remember - one college class is one year of a class at RHS!

Additional information

The Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) is the basis for the general education requirements at institutions that are part of the Minnesota State system. Completion of the MnTC requires at least 40 credits and a specified number of courses or credits taken from each of 10 MnTC goal areas.

Go to https://www.minnesota.edu/mntc for additional information

Transferology:

You can view the most current transfer course equivalency information in Transferology, a free website that allows students to see how courses transfer between institutions. Not every institution uses Transferology, but most in Minnesota do – and we recommend creating an account and using this tool.
