Working with Photos, etc..

Enhancing Your Web Site

Why Photos, etc.

  • Photos can greatly enhance a web site. Members like to see their photos. Those interested in your Chapter can be attracted by good photos.
  • Photos showing an active, involved Chapter attract people who may become members.
  • A web page about an Alzheimer’s Walk is more relevant and attractive with an Alzheimer’s logo. And a photo showing member(s) participating in it makes it come to life. It tells a story, visually, and commands more attention.

Working with photos

  • Size matters. You only have 75 megabytes of space, so if you plan on posting lots of photos, you need to reduce them in size. A 640 x 400 pixel photo will be about 102 kilobytes in size. A 2144 x 1424 photo will be 1.86 megabytes. Do the math: 40 photos vs. 700 photos!
  • The photos when displayed on a NARFE website will not be more than 1,000 pixels in width, and most show less, so any more is wasted file space.

Resizing photos

    • There should be free photo editing applications on your computer. Microsoft Paint or Apple Photo will do it.
    • Take a look around your computer, see what you have and get used to working with it.
    • ALWAYS chose “SAVE AS” for any reduced-sized photos. This saves your originals.
    • Do not resize up. You lose detail and the resulting image may be blurry.

Photo Albums

  • All graphic files, including photos must be uploaded into a photo album.
  • Because of this, you will want to create a “hidden” (not visible) photo album to hold useful images such as the state Federation logo, Alzheimer’s logo, etc..
  • You will want separate photo albums for each event.
  • Next, we will walk through creating a photo album of each type, published and hidden, and then publishing photos.

Hidden photo albums

  • Hidden” photo albums are used to store images you will use to enhance your web pages
  • They are created in the same way as any other photo album and images uploaded identically, except “Make this album public” is UNCHECKED

“Hidden” images

  • These are images to spice up your web pages
  • You may upload and use a jpg, png or gif file only
  • I have six useful images in my “hidden” album, 4 logos: 2 NARFE logos, the NARFE Florida logo, and the 2016 National Convention logo, plus a photo of the Sarasota Bayfront for our Home page and one of the restaurant where we meet
