Welcome to General Chemistry at Gustavus!

After completing the placement exam, current Gustavus students will receive a letter with placement advice, but will be allowed to choose which course they register for.
CHE-107/108 (Foundations of Chemistry II lecture/lab) is no longer offered. The 2^nd course in the Track 1 sequence is now CHE-110/111.
We are once again able to offer CHE-110/111 in both the Fall and Spring semesters, increasing schedule flexibility for students.

General Chemistry Tracks

What majors, minors, pre-professional tracks are you considering?

Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Geology

Life Sciences Teaching, Chemistry Teaching

Dual degree engineering, pre-engineering, or pre-materials science

Pre-medicine, -dentistry, -optometry, -veterinary medicine

Pre-pharmacy, -physician assistant, -physical therapy

Either Track 1 or Track 2 is appropriate

Physics, Environmental Studies

Chemistry is not necessarily required, but...

Nursing, Master’s in Athletic Training

Only requires CHE-105/106, but seek advice

Not interested in any of the above

Very strongly recommend to NOT take these courses

Do you already have college chemistry credit?

No college chemistry credit	Take the placement exam!

AP or IB chemistry classes (for IB, it must be the higher-level exam)
Did not take the AP/IB exam OR earned a 3 or lower	Take the placement exam!
Earned a 4 or 5 on the AP/IB exam	We recommend bypassing general chemistry*

College chemistry courses (including dual enrollment, CIS, PSEO)
Any courses with grades < C	Will not transfer or count Take the placement exam!
1 semester of general chemistry (or equivalent)	Take the placement exam! We will likely recommend Track 2 if B- or higher*
Equivalent of 2 semesters of general chemistry or more	Upon review of courses and grades*, we may recommend bypassing gen chem if B- or higher

* You must submit official transcripts/scores.

College chemistry courses only count as prerequisites if approved by the department.
