The wind started to whisper through the tall ackee tree,

Grandma shouted,

“Storm a come! Run come see!”

Jayden and Maya looked up.

The sky turned grey.

Jayden held on to his truck, Maya squeezed her teddy and they started to pray.

Mummy stooped down to them and said clearly,

“Remember our Tuff It Out & Buil’ skills, my dear.

First, calm yuh mind and breathe real slow,

In tru di nose, out slowly tru yuh mout!”

They collected water to store.

Jayden, Maya and grandma packed up food and snacks.

Daddy secured the window.

They checked for batteries for the radio and flashlight.

Grandma also reminded mummy look for the kerosene lamp.

Grandma started to sing a song,

“Together we strong so we can’t go wrong.”

The rain started beat and the thunder rolled,

Maya felt a tremble deep in her soul.

She whispered, “Mama, mi heart feel tight.”

Mummy hugged her close, “Talk it out — you’ll be alright.”

Grandma smiled and said,

By morning light, the wind was done,

The sun peeked out like a golden fire.

Branches messy, yard was a sight!

But hearts were brave and spirits bright.
