Thulasi & Raman

  • Thulasi is a agricultur Labourer.

Thulasi works on Ramlingams farms.

  • Thulasi gets 40₹ per day wages.
  • Though it is lower than the wages rate She comes to Ramlingam for wage.
  • Because Tulsi knows that Ramlingam will call him to work if needed.

  • Thulasis Husband Raman is a laborer.
  • Raman works by spraying medicine in the field.
  • When there is no work on the farm he finds work outside.
  • Like loading sand from the river or Stone's from the quarry.
  • Had borrowed money from Ramlingam for her daughter's treatment.
  • Had to sell the cow for repay of money to Ramlingam.

Shekhar

  • Shekhar is a small farmer.
  • He has 2 acres of land.
  • Shekhar has to sell his paddy to the merchant.
  • Because shekhar borrowed from the merchant for fertilizers and seeds.
  • Shekhar also goes to work in the miles of Ramlingam.

On Being in Debt

  • . Borrow money for seeds, pesticides and fertilizers
  • . Borrow from moneylender
  • .poor quality seeds,pest infestation, monsoon vagaries- crop failure
  • . Borrow more -large debt- distress & suicide
  • . Borrow from govt bank
  • .sold to traders in nearby towns- get income

Ramlingam & Karuthamma

  • Ramlingam owns 20 acres of land.
  • He has a Rice mill and a shop selling pesticides and Fertilizers.
  • He has taken a loan from a govt bank for Rice mill.
  • He buy's Paddy from a nearby village and sell it to tardes.

Agricultural Labourers and farmers

  • Two out of every 5 families in India are agricultural Labourers.
  • Landless Labourers depends on the land of others for their earnings eg. Thulasi.
  • Some have small piece of land like shekhar.
  • Farmers like Ramlingam are big farmers.
  • They also earn from other sources.
  • In some part of Central India people live by selling mahua Tendu patta, honey.

Lesson 4�Aruna & Paarivelan

Aruna and Paarivelann lives in pudupet village.

The main work of the people here is fishing.

Fishermen are unable to go fishing for 4 months during the monsoon. Because it is the time of breeding of fishes.

At this time Aruna & Paarivelan survive by borrowing money from trader.

For this reason they have to sell their fish at lower price to the trader.

  • Fisherman get loan at lower intrest from bank for purchasing net,catamarans( fishing boat's) engine.
