Paper Masks

There is just something silly about

Art you can wear!

Materials needed:

Optional: Thin cardboard (food boxes are great because they are thin and blank inside)

Paper

Glue stick or glue

Scissors

Coloring tools

Stapler (with adult help)

Yarn, paper strips, popsicle stick (or other material to hold mask to or on the head)

Paper Mask Construction: if using cardboard...

Find the seam on an empty food box.

Unfold the box. Find an area that is not folded.

Cut it out.

Create the outer shape and eyes

Fold the cardboard or paper in half.

Working from the fold, draw the outer shape.

While folded, cut out your mask. Ask an adult to help cut holes for the eyes.

Design & Decorate

Time to play with color and shape!

You can color the base of the mask or layer on paper.

Experiment and go 3D with some fun paper building techniques.

Add lots of layers and don’t be afraid of making mistakes.

Cut paper strips or yarn and staple to each side or glue on a popsicle stick to hold up your mask to your face.

I love this one!

She can’t see through it, but I think the idea of cutting out features (eyes, nose and mouth) from a magazine is pretty creative.
