  • It is an International network of networks that connects computers all over the world.
  • It is a global network of computers.
  • Internet Is a “networks of network”.

History of Internet

  • In the year of 1969, U.S. department of defence create a agency called ARPA(Advance Research Project Agency) for the purpose of defence.
  • ARPA design a network of four computers for sharing of data one in California and three in Utah. This network is called ARPANET(Advance Research Project Agency Network).
  • This network is spread over different countries and known as INTERNET.

Internet is not control by any single agency or country. For it’s smooth functioning some task force have been established they are:-

    • IETF -- Internet Engineering Task Force
    • IRTF -- Internet Research Task Force
    • IAB – Internet Architecture Board
    • ISP – Internet Service Provider

In India, 15th Aug,1995 a government own company VSNL(Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited) and some private company like Satyam, Glide, Wipro, Dish net provide Internet.

Uses of Internet

  • Exchange messages using e-mail.
  • Transfer files as well as software.
  • Search information through browsers.
  • Communicate in real time(chat)
