How do we make real friends?

6 of 22

We form real friendships when we

spend time together

more “shared experiences”

7 of 22

We form real friendships when we

understand each other’s life

8 of 22

Do existing social media platforms help us developing friendships?

9 of 22

Quick Research 🤓

10 of 22

People say…👂

Daniel (16)

  • “I had a phone pretty late, and when I had it, all of my friends were on social media”
  • “Cause I’m just looking at pictures… when it gets to an extended period of time, you know, then it just becomes like Eh, so I just turn it off I guess.”

David (15)

  • “To connect with friends and see funny videos”
  • “I sometimes feel lonely, cause I’m not doing anything

CUSTOMER STORIES

→ They started using social media to connect with friends, but they are unsatisfied because using it often feels like a waste of time.

“Students who limited their use of Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to 30 minutes a day for three weeks had significant reductions in loneliness and depression”

What do they have in common? 🧐

Easily-consumable contents

→ takes just a couple seconds to see and fully understand the posts

Easily-consumable contents

→ takes just a couple seconds to see and fully understand the posts

Is that the problem?

Yup

PROBLEM

15 of 22

When it’s too easy to consume the contents…

  • You won’t give each of them long attention, you’ll just glance through them
  • You won’t spend much time with each post your friends uploaded
    • Less feeling of “spending time” together

using existing social media platforms doesn’t effectively help us deepening friendships

PROBLEM

16 of 22

Make contents a bit more difficult to consume? 🤓

IDEA

17 of 22

Like using audio and video instead of photos.

IDEA

Difficult to “consume”

Only the ones who actually care about you would play and consume your contents

More focus on the experience itself, rather than the appearance

Would take more time to watch it

Feeling of “spending time” with them

Easier to develop deeper friendship

More “shared experiences”

Difficult to compare & judge others

Solution to the social & mental health issues of social platforms!

Vision

To use audio / video diaries to share experiences with friends more vividly & meaningfully.

Ultimate goal: Help people form deeper friendships by providing easy methods to understand each others’ life (audio/video diaries & chats).

19 of 22

Prototype

Learnings:

  • They love the design and the idea of the app,
  • They like the genuineness they feel when watching raw audio & video footages of their friends
  • They don’t get to use it in daily basis though; it’s not ready to replace the existing social media platforms.

Updates: New features to make the app more engaging & safe

Use audio/video diaries (like vlog) as a method to share our stories & understand each other better

“Would this work?”

Test Users: My friends, my friends’ friends, and my friends’ friends’ friends

The Future is People.

In South Korea, honest vloggers on YouTube are rising as a part of the popular culture.

  • People want to spend their time on humanistic feeling contents, mainly because many of them miss genuine, humanistic feeling interactions.

Atrable = vlog sharing platform, but for friends

  • We provide easy ways for ordinary people to intimately communicate with friends
    • Audio/video diaries & chat
  • Unlike YouTube, the audiences (“viewers” / “visitors”) would mainly be friends rather than the general public, and their conversation would be even more personal and intimate.

People will miss people as society develops.
