Purpose of Study

Purpose?

To evaluate the sustainability of The Daily Move (TDMo) initiative in Irish primary school settings.

WHY?

  • Potential to positively impact children’s physical activity behaviour and a variety of children’s health-related metrics.

  • Potential to positively impact children’s level of enjoyment when engaging in physical activity during school.

  • Ability to vary and tailor the delivery of the initiative to the unique needs and preferences of various class groups and schools.

Study Objectives

  1. Evaluate the impact that primary school teachers’ characteristics and interests have on the implementation of TDMo.

  • Evaluate primary school teachers’ adherence to implementing TDMo with their class group.

  • Evaluate the impact that different school terms have on the sustained implementation of TDMo during a primary school year.

  • Identify common similarities and differences between how TDMo is implemented among Irish primary school teachers.

8 Key Implementation Principles

The Daily Move has been progressed and developed from The Daily Mile initiative, to facilitate an increased variety of physical activity options and choice for primary school children when participating.

Supporting Implementation

  1. An online training webinar with the primary researcher before they begin implementing TDMo with their class group.

  • Access to a YouTube channel that will include a video explaining what TDMo is. In addition, this channel will provide video demonstrations of activities and games suitable for delivery outdoors, indoors and within the classroom.

  • Opportunity to regularly check-in with and contact the primary researcher to support their continued implementation of TDMo.

Role of Study Participants

  • Endeavour to regularly implement TDMo for two 5-week blocks during different terms of the school year (i.e. October/November and February/March).

  • Complete a short online questionnaire at the start, middle and end of the research study.

  • Complete a short 2-minute reflective practice at the end of each week during both 5-week blocks to facilitate the examination of the weekly rate of TDMo implementation.

  • Participate in one online 30-minute focus group with the primary researcher and other study participants at the conclusion of the study.

Provisional Timeline of Study

Wk. Oct. 2nd – 6th

  • 1-hour TDMo webinar tutorial held which will be recorded for those unavailable to attend.
  • Questionnaire completed by teachers that is primarily designed to measure their characteristics & interests.

Wk1 (Oct. 9th-13th), Wk2 (Oct. 16th-20th) & Wk3 (Oct. 23rd-27th)

  • Weekly reflective practice completed to facilitate the evaluation of TDMo implementation rate.
  • Question & Answer session held online by the primary researcher during Wk1 & Wk2 for teachers who have queries regarding TDMo implementation. Attendance is optional and sessions will be recorded.

Wk. Oct 30th – Nov. 3rd

  • Mid-term break for Halloween.

Wk4 (Nov. 6th-10th) & Wk5 (Nov. 13th-17th)

  • Weekly reflective practice completed to facilitate the evaluation of TDMo implementation rate.
  • Question & Answer session held online by the primary researcher during Wk4 for teachers who have queries regarding TDMo implementation. Attendance is optional and sessions will be recorded.

Wk. Nov 20th – Nov 24th

  • Questionnaire completed by teachers that is designed to evaluate the previous 5-weeks of TDMo implementation.

  • 1-hour TDMo refresher webinar tutorial which will be recorded for those unavailable to attend.

Wk1 (Feb. 6th-9th) **Schools closed on 5th for St. Brigid’s day**

  • Weekly reflective practice completed to facilitate the evaluation of TDMo implementation rate.
  • Question & Answer session held online by the primary researcher during Wk1 for teachers who have queries regarding TDMo implementation. Attendance is optional and sessions will be recorded.

Wk. Feb 12th – 16th

  • Mid-term break

Wk2 (Feb. 19th-23rd), Wk3 (Feb. 26th- Mar. 1st), Wk4 (Mar. 4th-8th), Wk5 (Mar 11th-15th)

  • Weekly reflective practice completed to facilitate the evaluation of TDMo implementation rate.
  • Question & Answer session held online by the primary researcher during Wk2 & Wk4 for teachers who have queries regarding TDMo implementation. Attendance is optional and sessions will be recorded.

Wk. Mar. 18th-22nd

  • Questionnaire completed by teachers that is designed to measure the maintenance of TDMo implementation throughout the study.
  • Teachers participate in an online focus group with the primary researcher that is designed to further explore key findings collected from the study.
