Autonomous Track Inspection Program (ATIP)

ATIP cars use the latest sensors and AI technology – measures beyond what the eye can see

5

  • Tracks are inspected to identify defects that require repair and maintenance.

  • ATIP car data is used for proactive track and roadway maintenance and capital planning

  • ATIP cars run in regular train service at track speed

  • 90%+ improvement in track geometry KPI (conditions per 100 miles inspected)

  • CN currently has the largest fleet of fully automated track inspection cars in North America

ATIP car:

Operating in a revenue train at track speed

CN Hi-rail in the field:

Revenue trains cannot occupy the same track while the hi-rail is performing a visual inspection

Technology Engineering - ATIP

6

CN operates the largest autonomous track testing fleet in North America and has operationalized the most comprehensive suite of autonomous inspection technologies available.

Rail and Joint Assessment

ROW Assessment

Tie Assessment

ATIP enables proactive infrastructure risk management, maximizing network efficiency

Technology Mechanical – Inspection Portals

7

  • Safety – More frequent and higher quality inspections help reduce accidents related to railcar defects.
  • Capacity - Increased thanks to real‑time train inspection as trains travel at track speeds.
  • Fluidity - Artificial intelligence helps experienced railcar mechanics identify railcars requiring repair before a train arrives at a yard.

Successfully identified and addressed over a thousand critical defects, preventing potential failures

Wayside Detector Technology

Hot Box Detectors (HBDs) and Hot Wheel Detectors (HWDs) are used to detect hot journals/bearings and wheels.

HBDs/HWDs are placed strategically on rail

      • ~15 mi. on main line
      • ~30 mi. on branch line

On average, CN HBDs/HWDs scan over 500,000 train movements a month (2022).

Dragging Equipment Detectors (DEDs) are used to identify low-hanging hazards on the undercarriage.

Acoustic Bearing Detectors create a sound profile of the bearing to predetermine degradation of the bearing.

Wheel Profile Detectors create an image of the wheel profile to detect abnormalities in the wheel profile.

Wheel Impact Load Detectors measure for irregular forces on the rail to identify flat/broken wheels and shifted loads.

Wayside Detectors help to identify a problem BEFORE It can CAUSE A SIGNIFICANT OR SERIOUS OUTCOME

Training the next generation of railroaders

Homewood, IL

Claude Mongeau National Training Centre

$60M

investment in CN Campus centers in Winnipeg, MB and Homewood, IL

19,000+

employees have completed rail courses at both campuses

Coaching, mentoring, monitoring

that extends into the field

Over 175

customers have completed training at both facilities through our Partnership Program, and training sessions are ongoing in the summer of 2025

CN’s Incident Training Facilities

  • CN has developed an 8-hour course designed for first responders with limited knowledge of how to respond effectively during a railroad emergency. Participants will be able to develop a strategic plan through classroom presentations and hands-on exercises.
  • Course covers basic railroad safety, how to respond on railroad property, basic tank car nomenclature, unified command, AskRail use, how to read train consists, railroad resources and assets, and how to perform a site assessment.

CN is the first railroad in the industry to have an active Incident Training Facilities

Moving dangerous goods safely and efficiently

Propane

(ex: BBQs, heating)

Propylene

(ex: eyeglasses, water cooler bottles)

Styrene to Rubber

(ex: shoes, tires)

Sodium Hydroxide

(ex: paint, soap, paper production)

~9.4% of shipments moved by CN involves some type of dangerous good.

More than 99.99% of all dangerous good shipments by rail arrive at destination without accidental release.

Accident prevention is key – with a focus on train securement, detection/inspection capital & detailed corridor assessments.

  • It’s difficult to imagine life without clean water or the synthetic materials, plastics or electronic components we use every day. Dangerous goods are used to:
  • Manufacture goods
  • Heat homes
  • Produce common consumer products
  • Purify water

Fire Mitigation

CN has an “Extreme Weather Fire Risk Mitigation Plan” that is shared with Transport Canada

15

  • Fire danger levels are monitored by CN through the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS)

  • CN has leveraged other carriers’ assets as well as sent equipment for other carriers to use at incidents.

  • Fire suppression kits are available on all track equipment and inspection vehicles.

  • CN has access to firefighting trailers through mutual aid, contracted agreement and CN company-owned equipment that is staged at strategic locations across the network.
