We really hope you enjoy the programme. Our role here is to support you and our aim is that this will be an enjoyable experience for all. We are not experts but we will all work together to reach our learning objectives.

Before we begin we would like to point out some logistics . It is now10am. Today's session will finish at 11am. We will keep the window open allow some ventilation. We have arranged the chairs to allow for distancing. If you would like to wear a mask feel free to do so. What is PEDL?

Programme to Enhance Digital Literacy

Support parents learn digital skills

Build confidence to support your son/daughter with blended learning

Purpose:

The purpose of this slide is to introduce participants to the title and origins of the PEDL programme. This is linked to learning objective 1 for session 1.

Notes:

PEDL stands for Programme to Enhance Digital Literacy. This programme is designed to support parents in learning digital skills and to build confidence so you can support your son/daughter with using Google apps for education. The idea for this programme emerged over the period of school closures where a number of parents expressed a lack of confidence and knowledge in supporting their children with online learning as they did not have the digital skills. On returning to school, the emphasis on usuing Google apps for education continued and this is going to be a large part of the learning experience for students into the future.

Classroom Demo

Purpose:

The purpose of this slide is to introduce participants to Google Apps for education by providing participants with a demonstration and inviting particpants to join a ‘Class’.

This is linked to learning objective 3 for session 1.

Facilitator note:

Google Classroom is the online work space for teachers and students. It is the digital hub that connect teachers and students. Each subject has a ‘Class’. Teachers will post subject material and assignment on their ‘Class’. Students can return their homework for each subject and access subject material. Students can access this at any time through the Classroom app.

Google Slides is an app for making presentations. This is used frequently by our students particularly for project work. I will now demonstrate how to open the Slides app via Google Drive and how to use some of its key features including the following:

Purpose:

The purpose of this slide is to introduce participants to the language and key features of the Junior Cycle.

This is linked to Objective 1 for Session 5.

Notes:

Your son/daughter will be entering 1^st year in August. From 1^st to 3^rd year they will study the Junior Cycle Programme. We would like to introduce you to some key terms associated with the Junior Cycle:

Subjects:

1^st year students in our school will study the following subjects (HSCL to enter subjects here). Students will sit exams and complete CBAs and assessment tasks in each of their subjects.

Short courses:

Schools may offer short courses in addition to subjects for their Junior Cycle Programme. Our school offer the following short courses (HSCL to enter short courses here). Students do not sit exams in short course but they will complete a CBA.

CBAs: Classroom Based Assessment provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their understanding and skills in a practical way. Examples of Classroom Based Assessments include oral presentation, written work, designing and making activities, artistic performances, scientific experiments, projects or other suitable tasks.. Students will complete one Classroom-Based Assessments in 2^nd year and one in 3^rd year for most subjects. Students will complete one CBA for each short course. They are completed within the teaching time allocated for each subject.

Assessment Tasks: After completing CBA 2 in their subjects, students will complete a written Assessment Task. The purpose of the Assessment Task is for students to undertake a focused reflection on the activity carried out in CBA 2. The assessment task is completed in class time and is allocated 10% of the overall marks of the subject.

Wellbeing: Wellbeing is a core area of the student experience at Junior Cycle. Students will study Physical Education (PE), Civic, Social, and Political Education (CSPE), Social, Personal, and Health Education (SPHE) and Guidance as part of our schools wellbeing programme.

Exams: Students will sit exams in their subjects. The exams will be worth 90% of the overall mark for each subject. Junior Cycle is graded in the following ways: Distinction (90 – 100%), Higher Merit (75 – 89%), Merit (55 – 74%), Achieved (40 – 54%), Partially Achieved (20 – 39%), Not graded (0 – 19%).

Purpose:

The purpose of this slide is to inform parents of the links between subject choice and post-secondary progression routes

Notes:

Your son/daughter will be entering 1^st year in August. From 1^st to 3^rd year they will study the Junior Cycle Programme. The subjects our son/daughter chooses to sit for the Junior Cert may have implications on their choices after school.

Science: Sitting science for the junior cert means that students can choose one or more aspects of science curriculum to study in more detail for the Leaving Cert. This then means they can apply for relevant 3^rd level courses in universities and colleges across Ireland

Modern Foreign Language: Choosing a MFL to study in school opens up more possibilities to your son/daughter when deciding what to study post secondary school. Many Arts courses require a third language in order to be eligible even if they don’t include studying a language.
