Thesis Statement

How do implicit and explicit biases impact academic achievement and long-term success among Black students in grades K-12 in the United States?

Implicit and explicit educator biases negatively impact the academic success and long-term outcomes of Black students in the United States. These biases cause differences in educational achievements. This highlights the need to eliminate biases in teaching to guarantee equal education.

Key Findings

  • When Black students misbehave, teachers and school staff are more likely to see them as violent or disruptive, which leads to higher rates of suspensions, expulsions, and other punishments.

  • One study found 26% of Black students received suspensions for minor infractions compared to only 2% of White students.

  • Black students, on average, scored 31% lower in math and 26% lower in reading compared to their White peers. A key reason was Black students being suspended more.

  • Those who face school punishments, especially expulsion, are much more likely to drop out, have lower academic success, and face a higher risk of incarceration.
