Self-Image and Identity

3 of 25

People’s identity online can be different to their identity in real life.

People might make themselves look different online by changing their photo, showing themselves in their ‘best light’ or only writing certain things about themselves.

If you feel sad, worried, uncomfortable or frightened online, you should speak to a trusted adult, like a teacher, teaching assistant or parent.

Self-Image and Identity

Your identity is what makes you, you. Your online identity is what you show of you, online.

Just like in the playground, someone online might say something that makes you feel sad.

Because the internet is there at home and school, it can be difficult to stop worrying about something.

Sometimes, you might see something made for adults that makes you feel odd or uncomfortable online.

Self-Image and Identity

A trusted adult is someone you know very well, who will always look after you

Online Reputation

If you put information online about yourself it can last for a long time.

This is because people who saw the information you put on, can save that and put it on again even if the original information is removed.

If you think you or someone else has made a mistake with what they have put online, you should tell a trusted adult who will help you.

How can bullying happen online?

Online bullying is when someone is targeted several times.

Just like with face to face bullying, online bulling can make people feel upset, lonely, anxious and nervous.

If you or someone else is bullied online, you should talk to a trusted adult who will help.

Answer:

C. Alisha is not being bullied if she falls out with her friend. Bullying is targeted, which means it is deliberately nasty and keeps happening between the same people.

Privacy and Security

21 of 25

If you put any information about you, online, it is stored in a database somewhere.

This information may be kept quite secure (usernames and passwords) or open for everyone to see like on a social media website (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat).

If someone knows your login details, they can pretend to be you and do anything they want to your account.

-Never share your password (passwords are like keys to your house. They keep your information safe).

  • Always log out of a device that is shared with someone else

Alisha is helping her friend login to TT Rockstars. It is her friends turn but they can’t remember their password.

Should she:

  1. Tell her friend to tell the teacher, who is a trusted adult.
  2. Take over the device and go onto her own account.
  3. Tell her friend her password so they can share it.

Answer:

A. Alisha must never tell anyone apart from trusted adults (parents and teachers) her password. It isn’t fair if she takes over the devices. If she tells the teacher, they can help her friend.
