Palo Alto Open Streets Business Survey

Ross Mayfield

Responses received 7/13-7/21

Observations

  • General pattern for restaurant/food business is the more outdoor seating, from street closure, parklet or sidewalk, the greater increase in revenue
  • This is not a zero-sum game. Some side street restaurants perceive a decline relative to closed street restaurants, especially ones who have not expanded outdoor seating. But consumer pattern effected overall and there is seasonality.
  • 60% of customers are Palo Alto residents, which is room to grow
  • No strong sign of parking or traffic issues

  • My Business is dropped %30revenue from last year.
  • We look forward to the weeks ahead for our street closure biz
  • I couldn't enter proper decrease/increase. we have been opened only one week and did 25% of last years total.
  • Please make note of that. Our sales are 79% negative compared to last year.
  • We appreciate your support and efforts.
  • Not being on University Ave is a huge disadvantage for us. The closing of the street has damaged our business more.
  • Thank you for all your hard work
  • Get more aggressive on street/partial street closures
  • Weekend are up, weekdays down. Parklet costs money and only two spaces offered.
  • This is bad for his business to have the closure one block before
  • Business up from Walgreens closing. Most business comes through the back door

  • City Utility Bill has a minimum they charge even though they have been closed for 4 months
  • If the city can or permit us to out signs on university let people know that we are open. This might help businesses on the side streets.
  • Everyone loves the European feel of the outdoor dining on University Ave and everyone wants this year round. People love it!
  • some of the delivery people seem to have trouble with the street closure, but otherwise no issues
  • Please extend the summer streets program
  • Social change takes time. Expecting the needle to move in 8 to 10 days is unrealistic. Not every business can adapt quickly. Businesses need time to adapt to the new options and residents need time to experience the new model. I fear that changes are being implemented based on a VOCAL MINORITY without giving adequate time for change to occur.

  • Continue to hear positive feedback from our guests and employees on the street closure.
  • Main affect of business is that the major companies are still working from home. Severe impact on my print business but shipping staying status quo.
  • programs by the City should benefit everyone and not just some businesses and residents
  • I like to Have Park let
  • We had some Doordash and Caviar drivers show up late during the first few days of closure. But now they know where to detour.
  • Please extend the summer program through 2021
  • Love the street closure
  • It’s getting busier each week and brings tons of safety spaced foot traffic to all of downtown.
  • We would love for restaurants not on university to also benefit. We are seeing people park in our back parking lot off of high street and walking to University. We are primarily togo/and 3rd party. We need the parking back. People used to park closer to the location they were going to, now they are forced to turn right or left on High street and then they park in our parking lot which is the first parking lot on the left.
