Tests, fire drills, bad weather drills, crossing the street, no running in the halls, washing hands, no leaning back in chairs, and watching where you are going.
ALICE Drill - Sheep, Shepard, Wolf Drill
This is an easy way to remember the process, in the event of a not safe intruder in the building.
The tree two blocks away - the place we all meet if we need to run out of the building. It is okay if we get split up.
Stop talking and listen carefully.

Teachers - what is your signal for Stop - Look - Listen?

It needs to be attention getting, chimes, turning off lights, a specific clap.

It is critical for students to be expected to listen to the teacher or important information and follow directions as told without asking questions such as, “why?”

The older the student, the more examples of “why” this is important can be explained by the teacher.

Classrooms are places of learning and learning can be noisy; however, every teacher should be able to gain immediate attention from their students in case of an emergency. Hopefully, as the drills are practiced, the students will come to see the value very quickly, no matter their age.

Many teachers already have “attention” hand signals or cue words to gain the students’ immediate attention. If so, the teacher can just explain that this is the signal during an emergency. Expand the expectation of Stop - Look - Listen when announcements from the office come on at any time.
