State Estimation and Its Application in Power Systems

Amir Masoumi, Postdoctoral Fellow – WCGEC

January 2026 4

Research Activity Overview

Energy Systems Research Workshop – Research Talk

  • Robust State Estimation Theory
  • Noises are assumed to be white zero-mean or with known pdf

  • KF is not robust against outliers

  • Statistically robust filter: Robust against outliers and non-Gaussian noise contaminations.

  • Engineering applications:

  • Missing measurements,
  • Outliers among measurements,
  • Outliers within process noise (model failure/computation errors), cyber-attacks

Control of Grid-connected IBR with LCL Filter

Amir Masoumi, Postdoctoral Fellow – WCGEC

January 2026 10

Research Activity Overview

Energy Systems Research Workshop – Research Talk

  • The goal is to control the injected active/reactive power in grid-following mode for supporting the grid.
  • Conventional vector control (cascade PI controllers) is shown to have performance issues such as non-satisfactory tracking and lack of robustness.
  • Medium and high frequency oscillations (MHFOs) are observed in injected power and currents leading to high THD.
  • By tuning loop-shaping weights and Kalman filter we achieve:

Control objectives :

  • Lower THD (30-50% improvement)
  • Avoiding saturation within modulating signals
  • Robustness against disturbances
