Understanding and Identifying Competences and Skills

WHAT IS A COMPETENCE?

The ability to do something effectively or efficiently.

Competences include knowledge, behaviour, and personality. They also include the skills that someone possesses.

WHAT IS A SKILL?

Skills are the specific learned abilities that allow you to perform well in given tasks.

COMPETENCES = SKILLS + KNOWLEDGE + ABILITIES

Exploring Competences and Skills

We’ll now look at a few Competences and Skills.

We will consider a range of different scenarios.

We will then consider some Evaluation Points based on these scenarios.

Your reflections will help you to evaluate your own skills at the end of the workshop.

Adaptability and Improvisation

  • Are you able to adapt quickly to new situations?
  • Are you able to handle unfamiliar situations? How do you feel in a new environment?
  • Are you able to take action on something immediately or do you need to do some long-term planning?

Evaluation Point

Reflect on these questions and think about a time where you’ve had to adapt to change. How well did you react?

  • Being in the UK is an opportunity for me to meet different people. Before I’d never met anyone outside my own country. It’s quite interesting to know what they can do and what they cannot do. Where I come from in Africa, women have just started wearing trousers in 2014. Before this, women were not really allowed to wear trousers and not allowed to smoke. I couldn’t believe that women here could quite easily wear trousers and even at church, everyone is just putting on their jeans and going. There’s no headscarf or fancy shoes or anything like that which I’m used to… I really like to see these differences.
