As a global community, we’ve moved through these various phases of how we interface in our world. Most of us are familiar with the skills and stories of the Agricultural Age in our country, when farming was one of the main ways of making a living. The transition then into the Manufacturing/Industrial age brought with it the rise of the Factory Worker and the need for a work force who could staff the growing industries. With the increase of technology, we then transitioned into the Information/Computer Age, where workers in high demand were those who held specialized knowledge and could add to the growth of the economy through what they knew and how they used technology. Due greatly to the explosion of AI recently, we have moved from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age in which how we think, apply and innovate with information is more important than just being informed. This transition into the Conceptual Age requires us to think differently about what all students need to be able to do as they leave our educational systems.

In Sonoma County:

11.7% of total workforce employed in Manufacturing Industry today

16.7% in 2000

57% of this workforce is employed in Food & Beverage manufacturing

In Sonoma County, we see a relatively strong manufacturing sector, especially for the County’s size, yet workforce demand is also declining overall. Mechanized processes are replacing hand labor.

From a January 6th article in the Press Democrat: “High-tech manufacturing plunged from more than 10,300 jobs in December 2000 to about 4,200 in November 2018. The job losses are primarily a result of local medical device and electronics testing companies shedding thousands of jobs in the past two decades. Meanwhile, during that same period the total number of local food and beverage manufacturing jobs went from 8,800 to 14,100 positions.
