Dual Credit - CiHS

  • Is this replacing AP?
    • No - AP Courses were a natural fit when aligning curriculum with colleges, but students have the choice to take the AP exam (or not) and the choice to access CiHS (or not).

Dual Credit - Running Start

Students earn college credit by taking college courses at the college (or online through the college).

  • - Still the only way to get an AA degree
  • - An honest assessment of the young person’s readiness is critical
  • - Parents are reliant on their young person for information
  • - Students are often out of the loop regarding school events
  • - It’s mostly free

Dual Credit - Running Start

Running Start is still the only way to get an AA degree

  • 90 credits are required for an AA
    • 30 of which MUST come from SFCC or SCC
  • Sophomore year is no longer the decision point!!
    • 15 credits per quarter x 3 quarters = 45 credits per year. 45 credits x 2 years = 90
    • CiHS credits might allow a young person to wait until senior year to opt into Running Start

Dual Credit - Running Start

Running Start isn’t a perfect fit for everyone.

  • Some students do great!
  • Self-motivated, organized, and deadline driven students are typically successful.
  • Some do not.
  • Folks who require reminders to turn things in on time or stay organized will struggle.
    • Struggling at Running Start is difficult to recover from because the academic terms don’t align.

Dual Credit - Running Start

Parents are reliant on the student for information

  • There is no PowerSchool and professors won’t talk to parents.
  • Mt. Spokane doesn’t receive grades until the end of the term.

Dual Credit - Running Start

Students are often out of the loop regarding school events

  • It’s the young person’s responsibility to check the school website, stay connected to ASB social media, read emails, etc. if they want to stay connected to Mt. Spokane
