Ms. Krausar Ms. Stone Ms. Bosman

8 of 23

Common Questions for Students with an IEP & SEA Equipment:

  1. How do I find my SERT (Special Education Resource Teacher) if I need help?

Go to Room 102/104. If your SERT is not available, someone can answer your questions or connect you with your SERT.

2. What supports are available in Resource?

The Resource Room (Room 104) is a quiet workspace for those students with IEPs and students use room 104 to:

  • work quietly, outside of the regular classroom, if you need an alternative location to complete activities
  • write tests
  • access your SEA equipment

3. When and where will I get my SEA device?

If you have SEA equipment, your SERT will reach out to you to discuss your SEA equipment once classes begin.

4. Where will my SEA device be stored and can I bring my device home?

Room 104. Students may come to sign out their device daily.. .Devices must be returned at the end of the day.

For Learning Centre students, your device will be kept in the Learning Centre after the first week of classes.

Devices may go home once a form is signed by your parent or guardian and returned to your SERT.

Community Involvement Hours

You require 40 community involvement hours before the end of grade 12 to graduate. This initiative helps you to make connections in your community and will help you discover (or uncover) your strengths and talents. It also provides the opportunity to explore career options and make informed choices about where you go after secondary school. Giving back to your community through volunteer work also feels great, shows initiative, and promotes positive well-being.

** To find places to volunteer you can look online (the Barrie North Guidance tab has great information) or talk to your friends, your family, your teachers, or any other people in your life. Do some research to determine what areas or community organizations best suit your strengths as well as your interests.

This is the form you can record community involvement activities on - starting July 1st, 2025..

Aim to complete your 40 hours early.

I Wish All Grade 9’s Knew...

  • Your experience is your own – do not base your assumptions on what other students have told you about courses, teachers, etc. Have an open mind.
  • Your teachers will help to support you but they will not hold your hand. They will treat you as young adults so you must be responsible and learn to follow through and ask for help when you need it.
  • When you need help, there are lots of caring adults in our building (teachers, administrators, social workers, EAs) and a lot of safe spaces – library, student success, guidance, main office, classrooms.

I Wish All Grade 9’s Knew… continued

  • You must earn marks (more than 50%) in order to pass a course and earn a credit for each class that you take. Your mark starts at zero and your participation & completed assignments are what will earn you those required marks.
  • Hand your work in! Teachers cannot mark what they do not have. Handing work in on time is even better!
  • Get involved! High school is about so much more than academics – there are clubs & groups at lunch, sports & band after school, leadership groups, and lots more! Participation is important in and out of class.

I Wish All Grade 9’s Knew… continued

  • Stay healthy – get enough sleep, drink enough water, be active throughout your day, eat regular meals, be mindful of how you are feeling physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
  • Hallway etiquette – walk on the right side of the halls & stairwells, not in the middle; be considerate of your locker neighbours by not taking up all the space or having a big group of friends block the other lockers; always clean up your food mess (in the halls & in the cafeteria)
  • Time management – create time to study & do homework so that it is not at the bottom of your list after activities and socializing. Procrastinating causes problems and it doesn’t take long to fall behind in high school.

What Can I do to Take Care of My Mental Health?

1. Focus on maintaining healthy habits: sleep hygiene, nutrition, exercise, establish a routine and minimize screen time

2. Doing things that you enjoy and stay connected: Sometimes, it can be challenging, but make an effort and it will be worth it.

3. Use Gratitude: Difficult times can sometimes cause us to see only the negative aspects of life. Take time each day to reflect on some of the positive things that exist in your life or around the world.
