Correcting Incorrect sealing-to-spouse ordinances - (Article 527783)

If a person was sealed to the wrong spouse, you can resolve the issue in Family Tree, usually without contacting FS Support.

Steps: Fix the family in Family Tree

4. Request and perform the needed sealings.

3. Request and perform needed ordinances for any new people that you added to the family.

  1. Add correct spouse to Family Tree if he/she is not already there.

2. Remove the incorrect spouse from the family. (You can do this even when a sealing-to-spouse ordinance has been done.)

If you cannot solve on your own, please contact FS Support

In order for the sealing to spouse ordinance to show, the couple relationship must exist, even if you do not have a marriage date.

When you delete a couple relationship, any sealing ordinance between the two shows as "Not Available." Try adding new, correct marriage info.

  • If a child is linked to an incorrect parent, the incorrect spouse may continue to show in the relationship. Remove the parent-child relationship with the incorrect spouse to resolve the issue.

Removing or replacing an incorrect spouse - Article 53976

  • When you remove or replace an incorrect spouse, the parent-child relationship also changes for any children showing for the couple.

Sealing-only relationships (72184)

Because the purpose of Family Tree is to record actual family relationships, the relationships recorded in Family Tree should be genealogically accurate.

  • For example, at one time, people were sealed to Church leaders rather than to their own parents or an unmarried woman was sealed as a spouse to a priesthood leader.

18 of 26

You do not need to record these sealing-only relationships in Family Tree.

If you delete a sealing-only relationship from Family Tree, one of the following can occur in the Ordinances section of the person’s details page depending on the relationship deleted and what other ordinances are linked to the individual:

19 of 26

  • The sealing to parent information no longer shows.
  • The sealing to spouse information no longer shows.

The record of the sealing is still preserved in the temple records.

Before you start

Redo the sealing-to-parent ordinance under these circumstances:

  • The ordinance was done before 1 July 1969, and either the father or mother is wrong.

  • The ordinance was done after 1 July 1969, and the father is wrong. The word 'mother' used in the temple ordinance takes precedence over any name that is given, even if the wrong mother's name was given.

The ordinances may not need to be redone.

Occasionally, you should also check for possible duplicates for the parents.

  • Removing or changing the parent-child relationship does not remove or change the couple relationship. If the mother and father should not appear as a couple, you also need to delete the couple relationship that connects them.
  • Removing the child from the parents does not delete the record of the child or affect other relationships for that person.

  • To change a parent for all of the listed children for a couple, remove or replace the incorrect spouse in the relationship.
