‘SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It’s the practice of increasing both the quality and quantity of website traffic, as well as exposure to your brand, through non-paid (also known as "organic") search engine results.’

What is SEO?

  • You learn how search engines (Google, Bing, etc) work.
  • It can be a career option - SEO is a $65 billion industry
  • Or career skill - SEO is one of the top sought out career skills in marketing

Why learn SEO?

An organic search result is non ad result of a search. Organic search results include regular website results, but also can include features like answer boxes, carousels and “people also searched for” boxes.

Search SEO, weather and a tv show you watch. Can you spot and name all the different search engine result page (SERP) features?

With the right SEO, you can get featured in these features.

  • Learn guidelines and edit the HTML of your site or edit the structure using a website builder.
  • Use built in tools on your website builder. For example, Wix offers a tool called Wix SEO Wiz that builds a personalised plan to push your page up on search results.

  • Fully built site - all pages can be found by another page link. All pages have content (text/images)
  • Sitemap file
  • Limit the number of links (<1000)
  • Use robots.txt to prevent crawling on irrelevant pages (ex. Infinite calendar pages, ads)

  • Create a useful, information-rich site
  • Include words users would type to find your pages
  • Ensure that your <title> elements and alt attributes are descriptive, specific, and accurate.
  • Design your site to have a clear conceptual page hierarchy.
  • Make your site's important content visible by default.

  • Try to use text instead of images to display important content,
  • Ensure that all links go to live web pages. Use valid HTML.
  • Optimize your page loading times.
  • Design your site for all device types and sizes
  • Ensure that your site appears correctly in different browsers.
  • If possible, secure your site's connections with HTTPS.
  • Ensure that your pages are useful for readers with visual impairments, test your website with screen readers
