The cloud is different from a data center

Instances are cattle, they're not pets. You don't get to name themDave Hahn, Netflix

  • Turning off resources stops incurring cost
  • Data transfer now incurs a cost
  • EC2 offerings often lack ephemeral / local disk
  • EBS can be unattached / unused and still incur cost
  • Destruction of EBS on EC2 termination can randomly fail
  • S3 objects have no last access time (yet)
  • Interrupted multi-part S3 uploads are unusable but incur cost
  • AWS API throttling can look like success
  • AWS tagging is unreliable / needs additional tooling
  • Containers need to be right-sized to avoid EC2 underutilization
  • VPC may run out of IPs due to Lambda ENI being cached for 60 mins
  • Complex microservices necessitate strategies like Simian Army

Cloud Overview

What is Cloud?

  • Compute and storage as a service
  • Software defined infrastructure

Why Cloud?

  • Speed of innovation
  • Undifferentiated heavy lifting
  • Pay-as-you-go / horizontal scaling
  • Elasticity / economy of scale / global

What is Different?

  • Procurement / month-end bill
  • Customer responsible for governance
  • Shared responsibility model

Cloud Migration

2014

Brandon Butler, Network World, IDG, 2014 and 2015

Migration Strategies link

  • Retire
  • Revisit
  • Rehost (forklift)
  • Replatform (lift-and-shift)
  • Refactor
  • Replace

HA/DR Patterns

  • Single region
  • Data backup to secondary region
  • Pilot light & re-hydrate
  • Active-active

Successful & speedy strategy

  • Lift-and-shift to the cloud, refactor in the cloud
