Meet 'Lord' Timothy Dexter

Timothy Dexter was a barely literate businessman who married rich and desperately wanted respect from the merchant elite. So they gave him advice designed to ruin him. He took it — literally.

THE 'SABOTAGE'

They told him to ship coal to Newcastle. So he did.

Newcastle was a famous coal-mining town — selling coal there was the classic definition of a pointless venture. His rivals hoped it would bankrupt him. It was a setup, and Dexter walked right into it.

THE BOOK

He wrote a memoir with zero punctuation.

Dexter published a book about his own greatness containing no punctuation at all. When readers complained, he added a page of commas, periods, and question marks at the end — and told them to 'salt and pepper it' themselves.

THE LEGEND

$0 → RICH

EVERY 'MISTAKE' MADE HIM MONEY

Failing upward, professionally

Dexter even faked his own death to see who would mourn him — then reportedly caned his wife for not crying enough at the fake funeral. He was ridiculous, lucky, and impossible to keep down.

THE POINT

Sometimes the line between fool and genius is just luck.

Dexter did everything 'wrong' and won anyway. His story is a hilarious reminder that success and smarts don't always travel together — and that confidence plus luck is a strange superpower.
