What was the purpose of portraits for aristocrats ?

Artists used to paint the aristocracy and their portraits were very codified and mainly showed the social standing of their subjects. The subjects didn’t reveal much of themselves.

Thomas GAINSBOROUGH was one of the best (good =exception )and one the most famous English painters. Joshua Grigby is portrayed as the most elegant and handsomest gentleman.
