We are one in the communion of Christ

11 of 28

One In The Communion Of Christ

Three main Ideas in 10:14-22

  • Communion with the god
    • Meats offered in idol worship was thought to contain the god himself
  • Idolatry served the demons behind the god
    • The meat offered was nothing. The intent behind the offering served the purpose of the demon
  • Cannot sit at the table of Christ then sit at the table that served as the instrument of demons

Flee from idolatry

Flee From Idolatry

  • The action of fleeing should not be associated with cowardice or of defeat.
  • The cup of blessing which we bless
  • The bread that we break

1 Corinthians 10:18-22

We cannot be united in fellowship

with demons and with Christ

15 of 28

Condemned Fellowship

  • Paul reminds them of the sacrifices under the Mosaic law (Deut. 12.)
  • In comparison to idol worship:
    • The Gentiles sacrificed with intent to demons and not to God.
  • The conclusion to this is that you cannot commune with the Lord at His table and then commune with demons at their table.

Our lawful liberties and the well being of others

17 of 28

Our lawful liberties and the well being of others

Lawful… Not helpful… Edify

  • A standard that Paul wanted all men to follow.
  • All things within the scope of God’s requirements are lawful.
  • These lawful things may not be helpful if they become a problem to our brethren.
  • Use good judgment with lawful things, only do that which edifies and builds up all Christians.

Rules regarding meals served to you by pagans

  • You have the freedom to eat the meat that he has prepared for you.

1 Corinthians 10:31-33

Give God the glory in all we do

and seek to save those we are with

23 of 28

God’s Glory… Man’s Salvation-1

Two basic principles are spelled out

  • First is the overriding concern of the follower of Jesus.
  • Second, "Give no offence to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God."

Paul is warning us not to offend unbelievers or believers by our manner of life

24 of 28

God’s Glory… Man’s Salvation-2

  • Paul claims that he seeks to please all people in everything he does.
  • The apostle would never trim the truth of the gospel to make it more acceptable
  • He would do all in his power to make himself acceptable.
  • He would avoid offending people or doing things that were detrimental to conversion.

25 of 28

Paul wanted to remove all barriers that kept people from obeying the gospel.

Paul’s attitude was

“I will gladly give up whatever it takes to bring the lost to Christ.”

In Conclusion

27 of 28

Conclusion

  1. Our freedoms in Christ are ours to enjoy.
  2. We should gladly put aside those freedoms for the lost and the growing Christian.
  3. Always seek the good of others above our own.
  4. Never be judgmental of others concerns for your actions, instead, be accepting to their needs and concerns.
  5. Always conduct yourself in a way to save others, edify the weak, and give glory to God.
