In 100 days responding to COVID-19, our member organisations provide resources to support their members, advocate to government to highlight the role of pharmacy, form a taskforce in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, and organise webinars to support members.

In 200 days responding to COVID-19, our member organisation continue supporting members with guidelines, advocate to government, electronic prescription has been started and community pharmacies remained open, testing by pharmacists were initiated.

In 300 days responding to COVID-19, our member organisation create online platform to support pharmacists with up-to-date and reliable information about COVID-19, advocate for remuneration for pharmacists.

In 400 days responding to COVID-19, our member organisations start specialised education for COVID-19, advocate to government on pharmacist role in vaccination and rapid test continues, awareness programme for public.

In 500 days responding to COVID-19, our member organisation reported that pharmacists are being involved in vaccination administration; in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to deliver some online training programmes.

In 600 days responding to COVID-19, our member organisation advocate to government to allow pharmacists to vaccinate; training for pharmacists in vaccination.

In 700 days responding to COVID-19, our member organisations reported that they have been conducted some research related to drug shortage, epidemiology, effect of preventive measure, member survey to improve vaccination in community pharmacies

Develop timely resources to support the profession -> Share best practice is useful;

Advocate to governments on the role of pharmacists -> Share evidence-led data from other countries;

Lets start with general themes of activities per 100 days.

Please note that the themes varied across member organisations; however, it provides general ideas of what member organisations did from the beginning of the pandemic till 700 days.

Member organisations that responded reported that they reacted to the pandemic by developing clinical practice guidelines for their members.

These guidelines were then disseminated to member organisations via educational webinars and digital events independently or with other healthcare professionals.

Many member organisations then coordinated with the government to ensure medication supply and COVID-19 diagnostic test kit supply, where pharmacists had an active role. This is followed by vaccination advocacy and digital events to promote the importance of vaccination to society.

In some countries, member organisations started lobbying and expanding pharmacists’ role in vaccination and diagnostic testing.

Following this, member organisations keep updated the guidelines to support their members in practice and conduct science and research activities and vaccination advocacy.

The Role of Pharmacists During the Pandemic

Pharmacists play a vital role in our community as healthcare providers.
They are the first point of contact for easy access to health advice and medicines.
Pharmacists have been on the front lines, providing essential healthcare services during the pandemic.
They have served as a reliable source of information and guidance for patients.
Pharmacists have ensured the availability of medicines and played a crucial role in the healthcare system.
Often the first point of contact within the health system – remained open throughout the pandemic

Lets move now to the general themes of the activities.

We categorised this into 11 themes. In today’s presentation we will only describe the themes in general and we would like to encourage you all to read our report to view some examples from our member organisations.

Clinical guidance to support the pharmacy workforce in managing COVID-19

This is the most common themes found. The clinical guidance reported by the member organisations includes COVID-19 prevention, pharmacotherapeutic management of COVID-19, disinfection and infectious disease control measures in the pharmacy, and updates on COVID-19 epidemiology. This clinical guidance was disseminated through a public access website so members could access the guideline freely. In addition, newsletters on the latest COVID-19 developments were sent out regularly by the organisations to disseminate the guidelines.

Public educational programmes and events

The Member organisations responded that it is important to address misconceptions and misinformation. These educational programmes and events include: 1) COVID-19 prevention and management, 2) appropriate medication use, 3) self-care, 4) diagnostic testing, and 5) advocacy for vaccination. Apart from online events, some educational materials and resources were disseminated through a dedicated website or leaflets in the community pharmacies.

Digital events and educational programmes for healthcare professionals

Respondents reported digital events, including webinars, were organised regularly to update pharmacists and healthcare professionals on COVID-19 management and the progress of vaccine development. The topics for the digital events and educational programmes varied but mostly related to 1) COVID-19 prevention and management; 2) Vaccination; and 3) COVID-19 diagnostic testing and screening.

Coordination with government or local authorities

Coordination efforts and initiatives include:

Participating in government COVID-19 taskforce to provide recommendations on COVID-19 management
Developed campaigns to encourage COVID-19 vaccination
Increased awareness of roles of pharmacists in COVID-19 management

Facilitation of COVID-19 logistics and medication supply

Respondents reported supplies of medications and personal protective equipment have been disrupted due to border closures and member organisations around the world have been involved in ensuring access and supply to essential medications, personal protective equipment, and COVID-19-related logistics.

Supporting pharmacies and pharmacists to perform COVID-19 diagnostic testing and also to administer COVID-19 vaccines.

Member organisations supported the development of COVID-19 diagnostic testing services in the pharmacies and they also support the set up of COVID-19 vaccination services.

Training and development of pharmacy workforce

Some member organisations informed the training that they organised, such as to administer vaccination, or to prepare pharmacists and pharmacy technicians for managing clinical and operational challenges during the pandemic.

Science and research

Scientific and research activities were related to survey and publication that they have done which related to:

COVID-19 prevention and management
Roles of pharmacists in COVID-19 management
Vaccination
Prevalence and burden of COVID-19

Law, policies, and regulations

Some member organisations were also involved in facilitating changes to law, policies and regulations for enhancing COVID-19 management.

Development of digital tools and websites

Apart from digital events, member organisations also developed digital tools and websites to provide up-to-date information on COVID-19 and management for pharmacists and the public.

Conclusions

This pandemic highlighted the importance of networking, solidarity and action – which are the very pillars of FIP.

It is essential to build capacity and utilise existing resources and infrastructure to respond efficiently to any future pandemics.

This can be done by leveraging community pharmacies as primary health care facilities for a variety of public health roles, including vaccination services
