How about IPAs?

9

10 of 44

What are IPAs?

  • In 1999, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) piloted an early version of the Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA). ACTFL developed the IPA with two primary purposes in mind.

  • First, it was designed to provide a standards-based, performance-based alternative to traditional assessments. Second, it aimed to catalyze curricular and pedagogical reform.

  • An IPA is an assessment tool that evaluates a student’s functional proficiency in the target language. By functional proficiency, we mean a learner’s ability to navigate real-world situations in spontaneous, non-rehearsed contexts.

10

11

Which is an IPA then?

  • Memorize and recite a 시조

  • Compare and Contrast different school menus from around the world

12

13 of 44

recite a 시조 → traditional assessment

interpret, compare, and create using real-world content → IPA

IPAs

Integrated Proficiency Assessments

  • Did you ever have to memorize and recite a 시조? That kind of exercise is exactly what the IPA aims to avoid.

  • Instead, an IPA task might ask students to read a Korean school lunch menu and answer simple questions about a typical meal. Next, students could compare the Korean lunch menu with one from their own school in the U.S. Finally, they might create using the target language by writing about the lunch menu options they would like to have at school.

Why IPAs?

  • IPAs play an important role in communicative and comprehension-based classrooms, provided they are implemented thoughtfully and not used prematurely or excessively.

If used too early, IPAs can raise the affective filter.

If used too often, they can turn into high-stakes tests and undermine acquisition.
