Advanced Quantitative Reasoning

  • 5 CP1 Math Credits
  • Fulfills Math Requirement
  • Required 77 in Algebra 2
  • Juniors and Seniors
  • Common Core Aligned

  • Requires students to apply mathematical concepts and logical reasoning to engage in authentic problem solving.
  • Emphasizes statistics and financial applications, and prepares students to use algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and discrete mathematics to solve a variety of problems.
  • Will fulfill college entry requirement as a 4th year math for students anticipating enrolling in Liberal Arts majors. Can also be an appropriate math elective for anticipated STEM majors.

Exploring Computer Science

  • 2.5 CP1 credits each (Part A and Part B)
  • All students eligible to enroll in Part A
  • Must complete Part A to enroll in Part B
  • Part B will prepare students for Java Programming H

  • An introduction to the breadth of the field of computer science through an exploration of engaging and accessible topics.
  • Designed to focus on the conceptual ideas of computing and help students understand why certain tools or languages might be utilized to solve particular problems.
  • Develops computational practices of algorithm development, problem solving and programming within the context of relevant problems.
  • Introduces topics such as interface design, limits of computers, and societal and ethical issues.

Part A

  • All students eligible
  • Comprehensive overview of Computer Science

  • Units of Study include Human Computer Interaction, Problem Solving, Web Design, and Programming
  • Offered as a semester course to be accessible to any student interested in having an overview of the field of Computer Science.

Part B

  • 2.5 CP1 Credits
  • Required 80 in ECS Part A
  • Can lead to enrollment in Java Programming Honors

  • Units of Study include Programming, Computing and Data Analysis, and Robotics
  • Requires students to apply their knowledge from ECS Part A to gain a more in-depth understanding of Computer Science.
  • Application and learning will prepare students for studies in Java Programming Honors.

AP Environmental Science

  • 5 AP science credits
  • Juniors and Seniors
  • Required 87 in current Honors science course
  • Required summer work
  • Expected to take AP Environmental Science exam in May
  • New AP science course offering
  • Stresses the use of scientific investigations to engage students with the science principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world.
  • Requires that students identify and analyze natural and human-made environmental problems, evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them.
  • Areas of study include energy, populations, geology, global change, pollution, energy consumption and biodiversity.

CP1/2 Environmental Science

CP1/2 Anatomy & Physiology

  • 5 CP1/2 science credits
  • Juniors and Seniors
  • Offered at both CP1 and CP2 levels
  • Alternatives to Physics
  • Accepted by most colleges as a rigorous 3rd year of science (if not pursuing a STEM-related major)
  • New CP-level class (bi-leveled) covering many of the same topics as AP Environmental Science
  • Hands-on and lab-based course examining interrelationships of natural world
  • New CP-level class (bi-leveled) covering many of the same topics as Honors Human Anatomy & Physiology
  • Course will examine the human body’s structures and associated functions
  • Laboratory work includes dissection

CP1/2 Forensic Biotechnology

  • 2.5 CP1/2 science credits
  • Juniors and Seniors
  • Offered at both CP1 and CP2 levels
  • NO Physics prerequisite

  • Forensics will NO LONGER be an included component of the Criminal Minds collage
  • Now offered at both the CP1 and CP2 levels (bi-leveled class)
  • Hands-on, project-based course, culminating in full crime simulation: investigation and subsequent court trial
  • School Resource Officer Detective Pavao is highly involved in the class
  • Physics is NOT required for this course

Science Scheduling Reminders

  • Teacher recommendations are done using 1st semester averages
  • Recommendations and/or override status can change, due to consideration of final year averages

  • Students anticipating collegiate study in STEM related majors should include Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in their science coursework
  • Course overrides can only move a student up by ONE level (example: a student currently in a CP1 science course can NOT override into an AP science course)
  • All course descriptions and prerequisites can be found in the WA Program of Studies
