Maven Remote Work Survey

Commissioned by the state of New South Wales (NSW)

First survey administered August and September of 2020

Readministered March and April of 2021

1500 Remote Works surveyed

Results reflect 59% of the NSW workforce

2020 marked a year that all of our lives changed in a way that many of us never saw coming. With the changes that the Covid 19 pandemic dealt us, fear and uncertainty have held us in it’s grip for 3 years now. How and where we work has been at the forefront of most of our minds, whether it be for our own health concerns, family and child education obligations, or lockdown protocols. The following analysis consist of my findings from a survey administered to 1500 remote workers in New South Wales. The survey was taken initially in August and September 2020 and administered again in March and April of 2021.

My intentions with this analysis are to shed light on results of the 1500 participants as well as set the tone for a conversation that may need to take place among employees and employers regarding how employees may actually want to work. The way we work has changed, due to unforeseen circumstances, but maybe this was a shift that none of us knew we needed…let’s take a look at our findings.

So now that we understand the demographics of who took the Maven Remote Work Survey I want us to take a look at some key questions that were asked to our participants and their responses. First we will look at a series of questions and responses asked to participants in 2020 and then we will look at how those responses changed in 2021. Lets begin with the best aspects of remote work. When asked about the best aspect of remote work not surprisingly 36% of participants stated that work life balance was the best aspect of remote work and 30% of respondents stated that preparing for work and commuting (or lack of commuting) was the best aspect of remote work. As we all know living in a city like NYC commute time can be beastly! If workforces offered more remote opportunities and less people were commuting it is possible that we could see changes in our environment due to less emissions and things of that sort…I believe that will be a great project to examine in the future but for now let’s take a look at other positive aspect to remote work

Does Remote Working, Really Work?

So we now know a few key benefits of remote work but everything that glitters isn’t always golden so let’s look at a few of the key barriers that exist with remote work. As with the benefits we will only explore a few of these and you can see more detailed analysis within my Tableau profile. Participants were asked in 2020 to identify barriers to remote work and out of the options provided I wanted to take a look at the barriers that were more employer related as opposed to personal barriers that potentially cause remote work difficulty. In 2021 participants were asked to state whether these barriers improved or worsened. So after taking a look at this slide you are probably wondering why I wanted to point out these things. As you can see our participants stated that all of the listed barriers in fact stayed the same…as I pointed out the 2021 survey was taken during March and April of 2021… at that point it had been over a year since the first case of Covid19 and the world wide response to the pandemic had been underway since Dec 2019. Though I do understand that we were all still getting our bearings and many moving parts were in motion I find it very telling that such impactful barriers to employees didn’t see much of a change during that time frame

So as the year concludes and we embrace holidays that may have a few empty seats, relatives in mask, and relatives who are absent due to illness or caution, we are all exhausted and tired of Covid. So the folks at Maven asked the participants of the 2021 Remote Work Survey what I have coined the Covid question. The question asks participants to Imagine that Covid-19 is cured or eradicated. Going forward, how much of your work time would you prefer to work remotely. Now I know we have spent a lot time talking about how many people felt a certain way on these question, I ask with this question that we look at it a bit differently…what stood out to me the most isn’t how many people wanted to work a certain quantity of time remotely but more so the fact that only 7% of participants would opt for non remote work in a post covid world. This is quite telling maybe people have gotten comfortable or maybe a shift in how we think about where we work has happened.

So we’ve talked about the good, we have touched on the areas of opportunity and now I want to quickly take a look at one part of the analysis that I found to be even more telling…when asked in the 2021 Remote Work Survey if they felt that working remotely was positive or negative for their employers, 1027 respondents or 68% or respondents felt that remote work was either somewhat positive or strongly positive for their employer. Given my experience working in Corporate environments this was especially insightful because some employers feel that remote work is not beneficial to their workforce. These reasons range from lack of productivity, to cost of remote trainings, and dips in company moral due to feelings of isolation. At the least I would say that this point alone serves as an area of interest that companies may want to explore deeper in order to properly educate their workforce as to why working remotely is positive or negative for their specific industries. Arguments can be made both for and against the corporate concerns but I believe in times such as this there should be clarity on both sides so that the full team understands why remote working will or will not work. If companies can move forward with clear understandings of the effects of remote work it could lead to employees better aligning with companies that fit their remote work expectations.

So what are those expectations? Do you want to be a nomad? Digital Nomads are defined by Oxford as “a person who earns a living working online in various locations of their choosing (rather than a fixed business location)”. Nomads can be entrepreneurs but since the pandemic they are also people like each of us who are are skilled in very specific areas who can do our jobs independently with little to no direct supervision. Digital nomads typically collaborate with their coworkers, colleagues and managers in the same way that we have spent the last 6mths via Zoom, Slack, Skype, FaceTime, and yes even Engageli. A quick Google search of the question “Reasons for choosing to be a digital nomad” yields over 10 pages of websites with article after article of reasons to be a digital nomad as of 2021… these reasons range from freedom to travel and work wherever you are geographically located to the lack of commute and of course better work life balance. We are standing at the precipice of change, a moment where we can be reactive as we were forced to be with the introduction of Covid19 or we can collectively be proactive and ease toward a way of life that may be appealing to more people than once considered.

THE SOLUTION

Use the Maven Remote Survey on current workforces to measure the pulse of current employees
Offer trainings on better remote work practices
Complete round table discussions with employees and management staff to determine any areas of opportunity regarding remote work staff

With all the information that we have discussed today I am sure many of you may be thinking what do we do with these findings. It is my opinion that we are in the perfect place for dialogue and action between employers and employees. A business is only as good as it’s product and it’s employees. You may have come into this presentation thinking that I would tell you that remote work is the best work that however is not what I believe these findings show. These findings do however conclude that employees are seeking options. Whether it be 20% or 100% most people people surveyed ultimately want the option and ability to choose. Our collective desire is that covid become a thing of the past, a pandemic that we all survive when many did not. When that moment occurs and life goes back to it’s new way of normal we can all agree that the last 3 years have reshaped our ideas of work. This educational experience was my first time doing school in a completely remote way. My success was not diminished because I did not go to a location other than my home office to receive this wonderful education. With proper planning, necessary conversations and tweaks to current norms I believe that we can get out ahead of whatever the next passage of time brings…hopefully it is never another pandemic but whatever it is the time for the conversation about post covid remote work is now.
