Responsible Personal Space

Expectations Refresh: Responsible

2 of 6

In our school, we are RESPONSIBLE

“Responsible” means that we keep our school clean and safe

We’re having this conversation because an example of responsibility is giving everyone their personal space — not pushing and shoving in school, including crowded areas like the hallways and cafeteria.

Replace with a student-created video (e.g., student council members).

Example outline:

  • Students crowding in the hallway, pushing and jostling each other.
  • One student accidentally bumps into another student and apologizes.
  • Another student reminds the group about the importance of personal space.
  • Students walk calmly and give each other space.

What does “RESPONSIBLE” look like?

  • Maintain an arm's length distance between yourself and others whenever possible.
  • Walk calmly and patiently in crowded areas, without pushing or rushing, allowing space for others to pass.
  • Avoid pushing, shoving, grabbing, standing too close, etc.

Why does it matter?

  • Everyone has the right to feel safe and comfortable in their own space. Imagine someone using your phone without asking. How would you feel?
  • It can also result in tripping, falling, or collisions. It also leads to conflict and misunderstandings.
  • Giving personal space helps people feel comfortable and safe at school. Not giving it makes most people frustrated, anxious, or uncomfortable — even if the person doesn’t tell you.
