Delivery rooms

The hospital delivery room is where healthcare professionals oversee the safe birth of babies, providing medical care to the mother before, during, and after labor. There's a trend toward so-called LDR-rooms that accommodate for labor, delivery, and recovery in the same room, and are designed to maximize comfort for mother and relatives.

We help to create a positive birth experience by designing delivery rooms that feel homelike, supporting the different stages of labor and that accommodates the birthing mother’s needs for comfort and privacy, while at the same time ensuring functionality for medical staff.

A positive birth experience

The birth of a baby is a wondrous event, but it can be stressful. It doesn’t help that often a hospital environment is clinical and lacking privacy. There is a need for homelike environments, that support the different stages of labor and that consider the emotional state of the birthing mother.A room that can be personalized helps to reduce stress and anxiety and to increase the feeling of privacy. Using dynamic lighting to support the different stages of labor, from preparation to recovery adds to a positive birth experience.

Intuitive controls for personalized room settings that provides a sense of control, helping the women in labor to create comfort and feel at home.

1. Personalization

Use ambient and dynamic lighting to create a calming and comfortable environment and support the different stages of labor.

2. A soothing environment

Support healthy biorhythms and overall well-being by connecting patients to nature with lighting that mimics the pattern of daylight.

1. Personalization

Delivery rooms in hospitals often are clinical environments that lack privacy which makes it hard to relax.

Our connected lighting solutions and intuitive user interfaces make it easy for patients to adjust the room’s atmosphere to make it more intimate or to fit their mood or activity. This promotes an increased feeling of control and helps them to feel comfortable and safe.

We can integrate lighting, HVAC, drapery and AV systems and control them via our user interfaces or through scheduling and automation. For critical moments, medical call staff can quickly select task lighting using the room switches.

2. A soothing environment

Each stage of the labor process comes with its own challenges. Delivery rooms often are clinical environments and mostly not designed with the emotional aspects of women in labor in mind.

With ambient and dynamic lighting and with calming, natural imagery, optionally with sound, we create a soothing environment with positive distractions to help the birthing mother relax, to reduce anxiety and potentially lower the experience of pain.

Programmable lighting can be tuned to the different stages of labor and even to support breathing.

3. Support biological rhythms

When having to stay in the hospital longer, access to natural light might be insufficient, leading to a disturbed circadian rhythm.

We offer lighting inspired by nature that changes intensity and color temperature over the day to mimic the natural rhythm of daylight, improving circadian functioning. This is beneficial for the mothers’ overall well-being and leads to them being more active during the day and sleeping better at night.

Depending on the stage of labor, bright blue light might not be preferred. In this case mother or staff can choose a warm and dimmed setting from the available natural scenes.

4. Safety and mobility

Women preparing for labor spent a lot of time waiting. We help improve their mobility with intelligent lighting solutions to move around safely. Using sensors to detect movement at night, switching on guiding lights so patients can move safely around the room. Special night light is just bright enough to provide guidance, while minimizing sleep disturbance.

Wearable RTLS solutions help staff to detect incidents and to see where patients are with real-time location tracking.

To prevent contamination, we use UV-C lighting to inactivate viruses and pathogens in air and on surfaces.

Quality and control

Being able to switch between different light settings ensures that the needs of both mother and staff are met throughout all stages of labor and delivery.

Being able to change the lighting helps women in labor to feel in control and to personalize the room for more comfort. For medical staff to perform well and to prevent fatigue, good quality lighting at critical moments is crucial.

Smart asset tracking solutions help staff to manage equipment and keep themselves and patients safe at all times.

How we can help

  • Best quality lighting — Focused lighting with high brightness and accurate color rendering helps staff to perform tasks without disturbing the patient.
  • Easy controls and automation — Easy controls to select light scenes that fit the patient's mood or activity and for staff to access the right light for each task. Optionally integrate HVAC and blinds.
  • Patient and staff safety — RTLS solutions to track and equipment and for patient and staff safety. UV-C lighting to disinfect air and surfaces.

Inspired by nature

In large facilities, rooms may not always have sufficient access to daylight. Even with windows, the biological effect of daylight is reduced dramatically a few meters from the window.

NatureConnect luminaires adhere to the daily rhythm of daylight, supporting the biological clock of the birthing mother and promoting better sleep and energy levels. NatutureConnect enhances the connection with the outdoors through natural views that also provide positive distractions, helping women in labor to relax and reduce stress.

How we can help

        • Inspired by nature NatureConnect combines white light, a blue sky, and a sky gradient, to create a connection with outside and provide positive distractions.
        • 24-hour rhythm NatureConnect provides lighting that supports our circadian rhythm, slowly changing during the day following natural daylight.
