Have you ever wonder what is Kepler 22-b? Kepler 22-b is an exoplanet that orbit around a G type star. Kepler 22-b is a type of planet that is called super earth. The reason why this planet is called a super earth because this planet is possible to live on and it’s bigger than earth. This planet has a potentially rocky surface and is covered by large oceans which can support life.
2. Kepler 22-b’s solar system
This planet orbit around a G type star. It located outside of the goldilock zone which would make the planet hot. It’s solar system contain only the star and it self which is making it’s solar system small. It located 635 light years away from Earth. The sun of Kepler 22-b is as big a the sun but it is colder.
3. Kepler 22b’s structure
Kepler 22b has a mass of 36 earth making it a super earth planet that also could be a super ocean planet. It is estimated that the temperature of kepler 22b is 262 K (−11 °C; 12 °F)
Kepler 22b is about 60% bigger than earth but is slightly smaller than our sun. scientist are not sure if the planet is neither rocky, gaseous or liquid.
4. How is life habitable on Kepler-22b?
Kepler-22b is habitable because it orbits in the habitable zone around its star (Kepler-22) and that will lead to the possibility that it has water and warmth to support life. But due to the heavy gravity there, creatures that could exist on Kepler-22b can evolve to have multiple legs to balance themselves and have a smaller and lighter body.
5. How to go to Kepler-22b?
The exoplanet Kepler-22b is 635 light years away from where you are sitting now! Which means that even if you were traveling at the speed of light, it would still take you 635 years to reach it.
\Does that mean traveling there would be impossible?
No! There is actually a way to reach this planet - Hibernation.
When the human body reaches 32 degrees celsius, it will enter a natural hibernation state. NASA has produced cryogenic sleep pods that will keep your body in the hibernation state and constantly inject energy into your body and remove waste. So theoretically, if humans manage to invent machines that can travel at the speed of light in the future. We might be able to reach Kepler-22b by cryogenic sleep. Though this is very risky.
And the most important thing: the audience won’t miss the point of your presentation
6. How is it like to live on Kepler 22-b?
Kepler-22b might sound like an awesome planet so far but living there would be a hard challenge due to the planet having twice the gravity of the earth. So if you weigh 75 kg on earth, on Kepler 22b you would weigh 150 kg. So you have to train your muscles a lot on earth before going to this planet and you have to preserve those muscles. Another thing about Kepler-22b is that it rotates on its side (90 degrees) which means for half a year one half of it will completely be in the dark and the other half will always be in the light which means temperatures could switch from frost cold to burning hot. Luckily, Kepler-22b has oceans that could make the climate mild by storing heat in the summer and releasing it during the winter.
We made models of the exoplanet Kepler-22b and it’s star Kepler-22. We also made a model of the earth to compare its size and orbit.
