GOAL 4: Land and Property

Choice A:

“FS: Czech Republic Land and Property”

In Land Books scroll down to “Abolition of Serfdom 1848” and summarize the section. Emphasize “court and land records moved from estates to government”.
Read or summarize “Contents of Czech Land Books” for key points about what is contained in land books.
Summarize “Research use” for how land book information can be best used in research.
In Feudal Estate Books briefly summarize the “Contents” section for types of serf information included, and the “Accessibility” section to emphasize the importance of searching archives online.
In Cadastral Surveys read the first and third paragraphs for background information. Then scroll down and review the Map Key section, including the color codes for the various items in the maps.

“Land Surveying Office Archives”

Set the language on the page to English if necessary.
In the Accessories window (right side) select “Original maps of the stable cadastre”
Click any point on the map that’s near a city.
On the right side, click “Original maps of the stable cadastre” again. Be sure there is a tiny number next to the link, indicating that maps are available.
Click on of the map thumbnails (lower right) and zoom in to show details. Note the year, geo area etc. in the help window.

“RT video: Early Land Records … (first video)”

Watch from 4:24 - 9:00 to learn about details of Cadastral Maps.

“RT video: Content and Examples, Part A”

Pause the video at 1:46. This segment discusses an example of an early land record, showing the timing of tax payments, people involved, and relationships.Learners can watch it later for in-depth study.

“Moravian Provincial Archives”

Click the Indication Sketches tile and then select the Adamov entry in the list. Zoom in to see title page information at the top and the colored cadaster map below, with properties and owners listed.
Click the Landlords tile and translate to English if needed. Click Show Images for the first entry on the left, which has a list of the landowners in the Babice area before 1771. (There is also a page 2 available.)

GOAL 7: Maps and Gazetteers

Choice A:

“FS: Czechia Maps”

- In Online Resources review the first bullet list for helpful links.

- In Tips for Using Maps briefly review the bullet points for ways to avoid problems with reading and using map information.

“FS: Czech Republic Gazetteers”

- Briefly review the first bullet list for types of information that may be found in gazetteers.

- In Online Gazetteers review the bullet points for resources that can be investigated later.

“FamilySearch Places”

- On the site, click the first link on the left side.

- On the right side of the screen, mention the map and the information panels that can be opened.

- Click the main link on the left side to show an alphabetical list of locations in the country.

- Open one of the list items to see it in the map. Note that items with a right arrow will expand to additional items when clicked.

Choice B:

“Old Maps Online”

- Use the timeline slider bar (bottom of the page) to show a range of maps from different time periods. Then select one or two maps to show and explain a few of the map features.
