First Days Back

  • Remember to spend time teaching routines & procedures as you build classroom culture.
  • Have conversations with students about safety protocols. Allow them to give input as well. They too might be nervous to be back in person. More information HERE
  • Spend time focusing on SEL

Set Up

7 of 31

Movement

  • Proximity is fine. Teachers can move around the room. Just remember to wash/sanitize hands often and social distance.
  • Allow kids to stand for stretches of time throughout the day
  • Allowing kids to work sitting, standing, under desks, etc.
  • If weather permits, teach outside for a brief length of time

Materials

  • Assign desk/crate to individual students to store materials
  • Bring chromebook everyday fully charged
  • Sanitize hands when entering classroom
  • Teacher sanitize when passing papers/materials out
  • Collect papers/materials in a bin
  • When returning books set aside for 24 hours in a “resting” bin

Student

Engagement

  1. Keep it Simple
  2. Be Intentional
  3. Be Consistent
  4. Use Movement
  5. Keep Using Technology

13 of 31

Keep it Simple

  • Identify strategies that you used in the past and modify them with social distancing protocols.
    • Keep in mind, it will be noisier as students will be 6 ft apart

Comprehensive Article: Active Learning while Physically Distancing

Examples of Strategies:

14 of 31

Be Intentional

  • Format seating arrangements and classroom around strategies you commonly use

Things to consider:

  • Seating arrangement
  • Utilizing the physical space of the classroom effectively
  • Use dots/tape to mark multipurpose spacing and traffic patterns
    • i.e. 2 lines on floor for Pair Share, partner reading, Quiz-Quiz-Trade
  • Use color coding
    • i.e. Blue Tape Partner A. Red Tape Partner B

15 of 31

Be Consistent

  • Stick to 2-3 engagement strategies that you would like to utilize in your socially distanced classroom.
    • Too many strategies may confuse students.
  • Clearly communicate expectations
  • Model and practice desired structures.

Examples:

  • Posters with easy directions and visuals for movement
  • Use color coding, signal words/sounds, etc.
  • Model expectations with Fishbowl strategy
  • Play Simon Says or Follow Leader game to practice movement

16 of 31

Use Movement

  • Students are still able to move around the classroom if social distancing structures are in place.

Examples:

  • Stand to talk/read
  • Students move to appropriately spaced areas to discuss/collaborate
  • Move students in phases
    • i.e. Partner A move first or Row 1 does Gallery Walk first

17 of 31

Keep Using Technology

  • Continue to use the technology you utilized with distance learning
  • Appropriate modifications will likely be necessary in a classroom setting

Examples:

  • Use Schoology to post assignments
  • Use Zoom for deployment with other teachers
  • Use Flipgrid for Socratic Seminars
  • Utilize platforms like Jamboard, Peardeck, or SeeSaw to engage students.

Adapting ELA

19 of 31

Whole Group

(IRA, Shared Reading, Writing, Mini-lessons)

Managing the Reading and Writing:

  • Use ELMO to display the book pages and notecards to display questions/sentence frames
  • Use Google Slides to display important book pages and questions/sentence frames

  • Use YouTube videos and the “snipping tool” on your computer to capture images of book pages.

Whole Group

(IRA, Shared Reading, Writing, Mini-lessons)

Student Engagement: (also see “Student Engagement”)

  • Provide multiple opportunities for students to share their thinking.
  • Include the language students should use (academic vocabulary, frames, conversation moves, etc.)
  • Combination of oral responses and digital resources (i.e. Jamboards, Google Slides, Flipgrid, etc.)

21 of 31

Small Group

(Guided Reading, Book Clubs, ELD)

  • Have a designated place to store reading materials
    • Guided Reading - plastic bag for guided reading books
    • Book Clubs - folder with post-its, conversation moves, etc.
  • Have a designated space to gather
    • Students line up their chairs in 2 distanced rows in class walkway
    • Students sit in distanced circle on floor
  • Focus on students building understanding through talk and written response

22 of 31

Independent Work

  • Break up teacher instruction with opportunities for students to read/write independently or write about reading
  • Provide choice in independent work space - “The Desk as a Cave and Homebase”
  • Provide opportunity for students to share key takeaways when they return from independent work
    • Notebook - paper or digital
    • Partner/Whole Class Share
    • Schoology - discussion board, assignment
    • Google - Docs, Slides, Jamboards

Adapting Math

24 of 31

Number Talks and Lessons

Number Talks and lessons will require few adjustments. SFUSD has created slide decks for distance learning which can be used in a classroom setting and Howard County has slide decks available for math standards (see tech page for links to both).

Some additional options include:

  • Use ELMO for displaying images
  • Limit chart paper on the wall example: choral counting can use one for the week
  • sentence strips for number lines (or virtual manipulatives)

Partner Talks:

  • Look at Student Engagement Strategies
  • Can also use shared documents for student chat and work

Whiteboards:

  • Consider whether you desire to have whiteboards at home or at school.
  • Use paper when whiteboards are unavailable.

Manipulatives

Back to

Adapting Math

Virtual manipulatives are options to use to limit the amount of shared resources.

Be sure to check out the 3 min video on the apps page that explains how to share work

Number Grid Chart

Didax Manipulatives with instructions on how to embed into a LMS.

When using physical manipulatives, keep in mind that items should not be shared between students. The use of individual sets of items for students to keep at their desk would be recommended.

  • Label items with names to keep track of manipulatives
  • Use Ziploc bags, pencil boxes, tupperware containers, etc. to house items and for students to keep items in their personal space.

Centers, Stations, and Games

Back to

Adapting Math

To reduce the amount of moving from place to place here are some suggestions of integrating stations or games.

  • Half the class complete an activity (at desks) and the other half work on computers (games or manipulatives at desks), then switch tasks.
  • A group on computers, a group doing an activity, and a group with the teacher in small group. Students switch to next task when timer goes off.

Socially Distanced Classroom Centers

K-2 oriented, but has great ideas for all grade levels.

Virtual Games

P.E. and Music

  • K-3rd PE minutes have been waived this school year
  • 4-6th PE and music will continue during student’s asynchronous time
  • Refer students to their Schoology courses for class times and Zoom links.

Parent Information

Reminders:

  • Do daily health checks
  • Charge chromebooks overnight
  • Send student at appointed start time
  • Send student with mask and Chromebook
  • Send child with water bottle and snack
  • Send only essential items or what teacher recommends

Suggestions:

  • Download Schoology App
  • Read daily with your child
  • Set up a quiet space for your child to work during asynchronous time
