W29 Notes (Part 2):

Factors that Affect Solubility

2 of 8

What factors affect the solubility of a solute?

  1. The rate at which a solid solute dissolves will increase when there is an :

temperature

↑ surface area

↑ stirring

3 of 8

2. The amount of a solid solute that can dissolve in a solvent is affected by: -Temperature (if temperature, then amount able to dissolve ) -The amount of other ions in solution (particularly H+)

Example: making rock candy- more sugar dissolves in warm water, comes out of solution as it cools.

3. For gas solutes, the amount of solute that can dissolve changes with :

↓ temperature

↑pressure

Example: carbon dioxide bubbles dissolved in soda

4. Solubilities of 4 substances at different temperatures

One substance is a gas. Which one? NH3

How do you know by the graph? Solubility decreases when temperature increases

How many grams of NH4Cl can be dissolved at 65oC? 60 grams

5. Solubility of KNO3 at different temperatures.

Define each of these three related words.

Is the solution saturated when 200 grams is dissolved in 100 grams water at 100oC? No
