GOAL 7: Emigration and Immigration

Choice A:

“FS: England Finding Town of Origin”

In Important Tips read the opening paragraph as well as each of the bullet points, to set the stage for finding the ancestor’s town of origin.
In Search Home Sources mention the importance of searching home resources for the documents mentioned in the list.
In Emigration Questions … review the list for questions to ask relatives about ancestors and family members from England.

Choice B:

“Immigrant Ships”

Open the list of English ports, click Bristol, and then click the SS Cornwall ship entry (1877). Mention the wide coverage of ports and ships on this site.
Scroll down through the passengers list and briefly describe the info in the Transcriber’s Notes at the bottom..

Practice Exercise

Open the main link for the Record Search Practice and read the problem statement. Mention that learners can click the Hints link if necessary but should not click the Answers link. Tell the learners they have (x) minutes to find the answers. Then read the answers at the end of the time.

GOAL 8: Archives and Libraries

Choice A:

Intro Video (Quick Research Basics)

Watch the video from the start to 1:08 for tips on using the British National Archives.

“FS: English Archives and Libraries”

Scroll down to County Archives, Libraries …and show the list of links for archives and libraries in England counties.
Open the Berkshire link and briefly scroll through the resources on the page.

”Find archives by English region …”

On the right side, click several of the entries in the dropdown button to show that there are multiple regions with multiple archive lists for each.
Click an archive list and scroll through the results. Than open a sample archive link to show the information included by the National Archives.

Online Books Practice

Open the main link for the Online Books Practice and read the problem statement. Mention that learners can click the Hints link if necessary but should not click the Answers link. Tell the learners they have (x) minutes to find the answers. Then read the answers at the end of the time.

GOAL 9: Military

Choice A:

“FS: English Military Records”

In Online Resources scroll through the long list of military record links. Mention that many of these are are available as QUIKLinks in The Family History Guide.
Scroll to the end and read the “Search Strategies” paragraph to stress the importance of identifying the ship or regiment of the military ancestor. (The last sentence in the paragraph doesn’t actually reference any search strategies.)

“Researching WWI Soldiers”

For each of the bold headings in the document, read or summarize the first few sentences in the text. Emphasize the purpose of the records and the types of information they typically contain. (You may want to increase the zoom on the screen to make it easier to read.)

This is a list of military records from the National Archives. Scroll through the list and point out the ones that are free to view online.
