SCHOOL SAFETY

Keeping everyone at Thomas safe is our number 1 priority. We practice our safety drills in order to be sure we know what to do in an emergency situation. The most important thing to do in any situation is stay calm and follow your teachers’ directions.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHAT TO DO?

Notification

Any time there is an emergency, you will hear an announcement over the intercom system telling you to move into one of our safety routines.

Listen carefully

Your teachers will help you. Stay calm and quiet and follow their instructions.

Soft Lockdown

Hard Lockdown

  • Move into the closest classroom.
  • Lock the door and continue other activities.
  • Stay in the classroom until given the all clear.
  • Move into the closest classroom.
  • Lock the door and turn off all lights and technology.
  • Shelter in a spot in the room that is not visible from the door or any windows.
  • Stay sheltered and quiet in the classroom until given the all clear.

SHELTER IN PLACE

Move quietly

Go with your class to a first floor hallway with no windows.

Take position

Kneel on the ground and crouch down with your arms covering your head.

Stay still and quiet

Listen for directions or the all clear. Staying quiet is important so that you do not miss hearing important information.

EVACUATION

Move quietly

Go with your class to the nearest exit quickly and quietly.

Walk to the field

Stay with your class until you get to the field. Move quietly in case a teacher needs to give you important directions.

Find your homeroom

Homerooms will line up in order of number starting with 6-1 nearest Belmont Ave through and 8-12 nearest Arlington Heights Rd. (see the next slide for a diagram)

Wait quietly

Line up with your homeroom and wait quietly for directions or the ‘all clear’ to return to your classroom.

PARENT COMMUNICATION

In emergency situations, please do not use your phones. Thomas Administration will communicate with families any important information once it is safe to do so.
