SUBDIRECCIÓN DE ESTUDIOS Y PRONÓSTICOS METEOROLÓGICOS

¿HOW WE ARE?

CIVIL PROTECTION SECRETARIAT VERACRUZ – STUDIES AND WEATHER FORECAST SUBDIRECTION

(15 years old group working for the State of Veracruz)

THE VERACRUZ STATE is affected by: cold fronts, hurricanes, tropical waves, mesoscale storms, droughts, tornados, coastal storm surge.

Our main goals: “to watch and report the meteorological, climatic and maritime risks all year around”.

We are two main groups:

  • Numerical modeling

three members, graduated from CICESE and University Hamburg

  • Operative meteorology

Seven professional meteorologists, some with more than 30 years experience. They are co-responsible for alerting the first responding authorities in case of a probable hydro-meteorological-coastal risk.

Numerical modeling - operativity:

  • We run the WRF twice a day, for the last two years, 00 and 12 h. in a work station,
  • WRF-Hydro, recently implemented, also runs twice a day,
  • still struggling to learn and calibrate it.
  • We are in the process of acquiring a better computer system this year.

  • WRF-HYDRO https://jhbravo.gitlab.io/wrfhydrover/index_3.html

Two additional projects for this year:

1.- LAND SLIDES FORECAST.

Weather forecast (WRF, GFS, ECMWF,….).

Development/deployment of sensors-stations for earth-surface movement in a pilot zone prone to land slides. One local technological institution will take care of the electronics and data transmission (radio); another institution will implement the transmission via satellite, (both in real time); and the Veracruz University will attend the geology/seismicity.

The final data-reception-system will be implemented in an operational way in our Communication Center that works 24/365.

Two additional projects for this year:

2.- CHARACTERIZATION OF COASTAL SYSTEMS BY “MUNICIPIO”.

And suggestions for better management of the natural coastal resources.

This project will be accomplished by an ecological local institution (INECOL) and the Engineering Institute of UNAM.
