Dear Parents and Guardians:
It is hard to believe that the fourth quarter is here! As I visit classrooms, the academic and social growth present in your children is evident. They are growing in leaps and bounds. Thank you so much for trusting your children with us each and every day.
As we get close to the end of the school year, it is important that you work collaboratively with us to ensure that your child is in school daily and on time. There is critical instruction happening and grades 3-5 are working on test prep to prepare for the rigorous state testing. Be sure to check out our school Facebook page and website for testing dates.
During our March SAC meeting, our members voted to approve our new Vision and Mission statements for the school! This is so exciting because our stakeholders have been a part of the creation, development, and revisions. You will begin seeing branding of this on campus and on documents.

Student attendance is so important to their success. Please be sure students are in attendance and on time daily. If a student is out for a legitimate reason, such as an illness, please be sure to send in an excuse note with the student when they return to school so we can update their attendance as an excused absence. If a student is out more than 3 days, a note from their doctors office is required. We appreciate your help in this so students daily attendance is accurate, and we can provide the necessary supports so your child can be successful.

The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a team of people representing various segments of the community–parents, teachers, students, administrators, support staff, business/industry members and other interested community partners. The purpose of a SAC is to assist in the preparation and evaluation of the results of the school improvement plan and to assist the principal with the annual school budget.

PSE’s kindergarteners are ready for a busy, happy, and fun month of April. The end of the school year will soon be here!
Our children are reading and discussing weather in Benchmark Advance Unit 8. In this unit, We read and compare texts about weather and we learn how changing seasons affect our lives each day. We will learning about temperature changes and how the clothes we wear and the things we do depend on the weather outside our homes and school.
In April we will be learning about Shapes in Math. Talk to your child about 2- and 3- dimensional shapes and some of their attributes – corners, lines and curves.
During the month of April in Science we will learn about energy and motion. We will talk about what forces cause things to move or to become still. In Social Studies, our Kindergarteners have learned about American history, Government, Geography and Economics. Be sure to ask your child about the difference between needs and wants.
The last few months of school are quickly approaching – help your child enjoy learning by getting to school on time each day! Thank you for your continued support!
First Grade:
Port Salerno Elementary first graders are continuing to do amazing things!
In our Benchmark Advance unit, we are beginning Unit 8. In this unit, we will be reading and comparing stories featuring the sky and objects we observe there, such as the sun, the moon, the stars, and clouds. This unit will encompass a wide range of genres, including informational texts, realistic fiction, and poetry.
First graders are moving into opinion writing. We have discussed that an opinion tells the reader what the writer thinks or feels about a topic and provides reasons why the author feels that way. In earlier units, we wrote opinions about our favorite characters and the books we have liked. In this unit, we’ll be writing about a topic that relates to the sky.
In math we are learning about 2D and 3D shapes and composite shapes. Composite shapes are any shapes that are made up of two or more shapes. There are shapes all around us in the world. You can help your child by asking them to find and identify shapes in their surroundings. Ask them what the shape is, how many sides does it have, as well as how many vertices (corners) it has.
In science, we are continuing to discuss matter and movement (motion). We will be talking about how things move and how everything is made of matter. Solids, liquids, and gases will be shown and students will get to have great conversations about the differences between the states of matter. You can also have conversations about how different things move: up and down, round and round, zig zag, back and forth, and more.
Kinder Primer Grado:

Second Grade:
Second graders are wrapping up Unit 7 in Benchmark and enjoyed “Investigating the Past.” Unit 8 is called “Wind and Water Change Earth” and will involve reading informational texts, opinion texts, and newspaper articles. Your child will be studying earth science and forces of nature. In addition to learning new concepts, we will also be thinking critically about different issues. This unit is very informative and interesting.
Please continue reading with your child daily and discussing the text together. We are moving right along in math and wrapping up measurement, counting money, data, and graphs for the quarter. Second grade will begin our unit on Telling Time after Spring Break. Please continue practicing math skills at home, in the car, and even at the beach.

Third Graders will be taking the ELA FSA on April 5th and 6th!
In the classroom, we are halfway through Unit 8 of our Benchmark Advance Reading and Writing, where students are reading all about weather and climate and how we understand change. Student are writing research reports about weather and will complete a weather chart where they collect information on weather across 4 days. Student will also be beginning Unit 9 where they will be learning about spending time and money.
In Math, students are hard at work learning fractions. Students are learning how to count fractions on a number line and find equivalent fractions. In Science, students are finishing up our unit on matter and will be learning about energy.
3rd Grade Families, please remember students should be reading every night! Remember to practice your multiplication facts!

Third Grade
Los estudiantes de 3er grado disfrutaron su viaje al Centro de Estudios Ambientales. Pudimos entrar al agua y observar varios animales marinos! En el centro, los estudiantes visitaron las exhibiciones y los tanques de agua. También pudieron aprender sobre animales que viven allí.

En matemáticas estudiamos sobre el área y perímetro. Después de las vacaciones de la primavera, los estudiantes iniciarán el aprendizaje sobre fracciones. En ciencia estudian sobre materia.
Familias de los estudiantes de 3er grado, por favor recuerde que los estudiantes deben de estar leyendo cada noche así como también practicar las tablas de multiplicación!
Los estudiantes de 3er Grado tomarán su exámen Estatal de Lectura (ELA FSA) el 5 y 6 de abril!
Segundo Grado Tercer Grado
Segundo grado termina la Unidad 7 en Benchmark y disfrutan “Investigar el Pasado.” La Unidad 8 se llama “Aire y Agua Cambian la Tierra” donde leerán Texto Informacional, Texto con opinión, y artículos del periodico.
Su hijo estudiará ciencias de la tierra y fuerzas naturales. Estudiaremos nuevos conceptos así como también usar nuestro pensamiento crítico sobre diferentes conceptos. Esta unidad es informativa e interesante. Por favor continúe leyendo con su hijo diariamente y hablando sobre la lectura. En matemáticas vemos medidas, contar dinero, y gráficas utilizando cuartos. Iniciaremos la Unidad de la Hora después de las vacaciones de primavera. Continúe practicando destrezas de matemáticas en casa, en el carro y aun en la playa.

Fourth Grade
Can you believe we’re already in the 4rd Quarter of 4th grade? WOW! Time is flying by and our 4th grade Stingrays are chugging along, working harder than ever to meet the expectation of the Florida State Standards.
In ELA, we are writing, writing, writing our hearts out! We have been switching back and forth between opinion and informative essays to get lots of practice. For reading, we have been working with informational texts on natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes. Students have been identifying text structure and text features and how each helps and supports their understanding of the text!
Our mathematicians are moving into the fascinating world of…. FRACTIONS! Students will be learning how to compare, order, add and subtract fractions. We will also be relating fractions to decimals to understand how they can be equivalent. You can help your child practice these skills at home in the kitchen. Have your child help you cook dinner and let him/her do the measuring. Ask your child to show you how to convert that decimal on the can of food in your pantry into a fraction. Take it a step further and then have him/her write equivalent fractions.
Our scientists will be exploring Energy and Motion! Classes have begun investigating this topic through the implementation of our new Lego Robotics program. They are learning how to build and work simple robots using Legos and, most importantly, working as a team to problem solve!
Middle school is just around the corner! Be on the lookout for middle school information regarding orientations. Also, if you haven’t already done so, please provide your Proof of Residency forms as soon as possible to your child’s teacher. This documentation is required for middle school registration.
The 5th Grade FSA Writing test is April 7th. Our magnificent writers have worked so hard all year in preparation. On this day, it’s important that students are on time to school , be well rested, and eat a healthy breakfast. It’s their time to SHINE!
5th Grade scientists have been learning about Force and Energy. This exciting unit allows students to see science in action in the world around them. Teachers will be reviewing Science standards before the state science assessment on May 16-17.
We are concluding our measurement unit in math. In this unit, students learned how to convert units of measurement, tell elapsed time, plot on a coordinate grid, and calculate volume. Our FSA Math test is May 9-10.
In ELA, our upcoming Unit 9 Benchmark will allow the students to explore economic development by focusing on the factors that shape the development of a U.S. city. Students will be taking their FSA ELA test on May 2-3.
Cuarto Grado
Puedes creer que ya estamos en el cuarto trimestre de cuarto grado? ¡GUAU! El tiempo pasa volando y nuestras mantarrayas de cuarto grado avanzan, trabajando más duro que nunca para cumplir con las expectativas de los estándares del estado de Florida.

También relacionamos fracciones con decimales para entender cómo pueden ser equivalentes. Puede ayudar a su hijo a practicar estas habilidades en casa en la cocina. Pídale a su hijo que lo ayude a preparar la cena y déjelo tomar las medidas. Pídale a su hijo que le muestre cómo convertir ese decimal de la lata de comida en su despensa en una fracción. Vaya un paso más allá y luego pídale que escriba fracciones equivalentes.
¡Nuestros científicos explorarán la energía y el movimiento! 5to Grado

Math Updates!
As we enter the fourth quarter of the school year, we continue to use AVID engagement and writing strategies during our math block to promote collaborative learning, oral language, and building math confidence. We continue to focus on our three S.I.P. goals for math in the areas of number sense, student growth and student proficiency. Our three S.I.P. goals have been the driving force for our math instruction this year. Our stingrays have worked extremely hard and as our school year comes to an end it’s time to showcase all that hard work with state assessments. More information on state assessments to come. Stay tuned!
Currently, our school district is in the middle of a K-12 mathematics curriculum adoption. The recommended Mathematics Instructional Materials for Elementary is SAVVAS . From now until April 22, 2022 is considered our public objection period. If you would like to view the SAVVAS material, please reach out to Dr. Mary White, Coordinator of Mathematics, at (772) 219-1200 Ext 30181. As a parent or a member of the community, you have the right to petition to object to the current math curriculum. Here is the link. In May 2022, during the monthly School Board meeting time will be set aside to share your objections publicly.
Martin County is adopting new math standards to go along with new math curriculum. For the 2022-2023 school year, the Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards in Math will be taught K through 12.
Math Updates!

The Port Salerno media center is very pleased to announce that it will be putting on our second book fair of the year! This book Fair will be held March 31st - April 11th during the school day. Students will have the opportunity to shop during their scheduled media related arts time. The Book Fair will also be open during conference night April 5th. Feel free to stop by the media center and shop before or after your scheduled conference!

We’re excited to help our 5th graders for their transition to middle school. Anderson Middle School and Murray Middle School have been invited to come present and answer questions in late April.
Our School Social Services Worker, Ms. Harris, will also present to the 5th graders about what to expect in 6th grade (ex: time between classes, dress codes, etc.)
We know they are equipped for middle school and hope they remember their time here at P.S.E.

Our students have learned so much since August! Students are practicing their test-taking strategies and we know that they’re ready to do their best.

While testing sometimes causes class schedules to shift you can help by reminding your child that it is okay! Teachers and staff are mindful of this adjustment and it is helpful when we all stay positive and flexible at this time.
You can add these dates to your calendar at home:
Grade 3 ELA Reading April 5th and April 6th
Grade 4 and Grade 5 ELA Writing April 7th
Grade 4 ELA Reading May 2nd May 3rd
Grade 3 Math May 5th and May 6th
Grade 4 and Grade 5 Math May 9th and May 10th
