Create a Space

Why? Creating a consistent space helps learners feel prepared, and provides predictability.

  • Help designate a space for learning (doesn’t need to be big or fancy!)
  • Think about the essentials they need (materials, tech, etc.)
  • Have a consistent place to display schedules and reminders

Schedules and Routines

Why? Routines and rituals decrease anxiety.

  • Create schedules together
  • Post them in a noticeable place
  • Refer to the schedules throughout the day
  • Use visuals to help support understanding

Stay Organized

Why? There is a lot to keep track of, and it can be overwhelming for everyone!

  • Use favorites feature to keep most important sites up-front
  • Try the “to-do list” in google classroom for a list of assignments to complete
  • Teach students how to close tabs they don’t need

Chunk Assignments

Why? Setting mini-deadlines is an essential life skill that we use all of the time as adults.

  • Help students break down large tasks into smaller segments
  • Plan when each segment will be completed
  • Use agendas or calendars

Time Management

Why? If timers are a helpful tool they can aid students to transition from task to task.

  • Have students set their own timers if appropriate
  • Can be used to set limits for preferred activities, “work” sessions, or when something is challenging

Checklists for Completing Tasks

Why? Help lighten the cognitive load so students can focus on the learning.

  • Use checklists of the process (also for non-academic tasks!)
  • Create reminders that they see frequently
  • Use visuals, keep the language simple
