Human Reproductive System

The human reproductive system is made up of organs that allow us to produce offspring for the survival of the species, and pass on hereditary traits from one generation to the next.

There are major differences between the male and female reproductive system.

These differences allow the combining of genetic material between two individuals.

Function Female Reproductive System Structures

  • Ovaries
    • Produce the female's egg cells and secrete female hormones oestrogen and progesterone
  • Uterine (fallopian) tubes
    • Collect the egg released from the ovaries during ovulation and transport it to the uterus (fertilisation usually occurs here)
  • Uterus
    • A zygote (fertilized egg) will implant in the uterine wall and develop into a baby
  • Cervix
    • Dilates and contracts to propel a developed baby through the birth canal
  • Vagina
    • Recieves the penis during sexual intercouse and allows passage of baby during birth
  • Vulva
    • External structures that protect sexual organs and urinary opening from trauma and infection.

Function Male Reproductive System Structures

  • Scrotum
    • Protects testes and keeps them at a lower temperature than the body
  • Testes
    • Produces sperm and secrete male hormone testosterone
  • Epididymis
    • Sperm mature here after leaving the testes
  • Vas Deferens
    • Carry sperm from epididymis to urethra
  • Seminal Vesicles and Prostate Gland
    • Secrete seminal fluid which nourish and protect sperm
  • Urethra
    • Carries both urine and semen to penis (not at same time)
  • Penis
    • Deposits semen (sperm+seminal fluid) into the vagina.
