STATIVE vs DYNAMIC VERBS

Utilizamos los DYNAMIC VERBS, también conocidos como verbos de acción, cuando queremos expresar acciones dinámicas que representan un proceso activo de acción (play, dance, take, sing, study).

Por otro lado, utilizamos los STATIVE VERBS cuando queremos expresar acciones referentes a estados de ser o situaciones que se mantienen sin cambios durante un tiempo prolongado (have, be, want, love).

Es mucho más común utilizar dynamic verbs al hablar en tiempos continuos:

I have a car ✅

I’m having a car ❌

Utilizamos los

DYNAMIC VERBS, también

conocidos como “action verbs”,

cuando queremos referirnos a

acciones dinámicas, que representan un

proceso activo de acción.

Estas acciones involucran movimiento y

usualmente son observables a simple vista.

Los dynamic verbs pueden ser utilizados

en los tiempos continuos sin problemas.

Drive, run, take, play, teach, study, work, dance, make, write, go, etc…

I am dancing right now

Estoy bailando justo ahora

I dance on the weekends

Yo bailo los fines de semana

utilizamos los STATIVE VERBS cuando queremos expresar acciones referentes a estados de ser o a situaciones que se mantienen sin cambios durante un tiempo prolongado.

be, like, remember, hear, have, know, love, want, hate, believe, etc…

I know this song!

¡Yo conozco esta canción!

Por regla general, no podemos utilizar los stative verbs en los tiempos continuos.

Algunos verbos pueden ser utilizados como DYNAMIC VERBS o como STATIVE VERBS, dependiendo de su contexto.

  • HAVE [STATIVE]: Cuando hablamos de “posesión”
    • I have a car (tengo un auto)
  • HAVE [DYNAMIC]: Cuando hablamos de “experiencia”, de “pasar” el rato.
    • I’m having a wonderful day (estoy pasando un día maravilloso)
  • LOOK [STATIVE]: Cuando nos referimos a que algo “parece ser” de cierta manera.
    • It looks weird (luce raro)
  • LOOK [DYNAMIC]: Cuando nos referimos al verbo “mirar”
    • I’m looking at you (te estoy mirando)
  • SEE [STATIVE]: Cuando nos referimos al verbo “understand”
    • I see what you mean (entiendo a qué te refieres)
  • SEE [DYNAMIC]: Cuando nos referimos a “ver a alguien / salir con alguien” románticamente.
    • I’m seeing a new girl (estoy saliendo con una chica nueva)

Algunos verbos pueden ser utilizados como DYNAMIC VERBS o como STATIVE VERBS, dependiendo de su contexto.

  • THINK [STATIVE]: Cuando expresamos una “opinión”.
    • I think it’s a bad idea (Creo que es una mala idea)
  • THINK [DYNAMIC]: Cuando hablamos de “pensamientos” en la mente.
    • I’m thinking about you (Estoy pensando en tí)
  • TASTE [STATIVE]: Cuando nos referimos al estado del “sabor” de algo
    • The coffee tastes funny (El café sabe extraño)
  • TASTE [DYNAMIC]: Cuando nos referimos a la acción de “probar” el sabor de algo
    • I’m tasting the coffee to see if it’s good (estoy probando el café para ver si está bueno)
