European Green Deal

The European Green Deal is the roadmap for making the EU's economy sustainable, by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities, and making the transition just and inclusive for all.

Recognising that climate change and environmental degradation are existential threats to Europe and the world, the EGD provides an ambitious package of measures, followed by EU Green Deal Action Plan. These measures include cutting greenhouse gas emissions, investing in cutting-edge research and innovation, and preserving Europe's natural environment.

Fighting climate change and achieving the transition to a climate-neutral society requires significant investments, research and innovation, new ways of producing and consuming, managing waste, and changes in how we work, use transport and live together.

Since solid waste, wastewater, water supply, energy efficiency, air pollution – all these things affect climate change, the EGD addresses environment (waste and recycling) among the key action areas also towards being climate neutral in 2050

Sustainable, smart and resilient mobility – Future Vision

  • at least 30 million zero-emission vehicles will be in operation on European roads.
  • 100 European cities will be climate neutral.
  • high-speed rail traffic will double.
  • scheduled collective travel of under 500 km should be carbon neutral within the EU.
  • automated mobility will be deployed at large scale.
  • zero-emission vessels will become ready for market.

  • zero-emission large aircraft will become ready for market.

  • nearly all cars, vans, buses as well as new heavy-duty vehicles will be zero-emission.
  • rail freight traffic will double.
  • high-speed rail traffic will triple.
  • the multimodal Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) equipped for sustainable and smart transport with high speed connectivity will be operational for the comprehensive network.

  • Transport accounts for a quarter of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions, and still growing. To achieve climate neutrality, a 90% reduction in transport emissions is needed by 2050.
  • Multimodal transport needs a strong boost. This will increase the efficiency of the transport system. As a matter of priority, a substantial part of the 75% of inland freight carried today by road should shift onto rail and inland waterways.
  • Automated and connected multimodal mobility will play an increasing role, together with smart traffic management systems enabled by digitalisation.
  • The price of transport must reflect the impact it has on the environment and on health.
  • The EU should in parallel ramp-up the production and deployment of sustainable alternative transport fuels. By 2025, about 1 million public recharging and refuelling stations will be needed for the 13 million zero- and low-emission vehicles expected on European roads.
  • Transport should become drastically less polluting, especially in cities.
