Overview

My fellowship started in mid April and I have mostly been focused on the openMRS 3.x frontend development.

I have so far worked on 3 repos:

Fellowship Journey

Where did you begin?

I started my fellowship on 15th April 2022.

At the beginning of your fellowship, what were your top three learning goals?

1. Goal 1 (Getting started with building micro frontends and modules) - (COMPLETED)
2. Goal 2 (Development work on the 3.x, working on various modules) - (IN PROGRESS)
3. Goal 3 (Fellowship focus project) - (IN PROGRESS)

Who did you work with?

• Mentor: Zac Butko
• Devs: 3.x frontend devs, 3.x squad, appointments squad, Palladium team, Donald, Denis.
• Management: Fellowship managers and project managers.
• Other community senior engineers and advisors like Ian, Brandones

Lessons Learned

What challenges did you encounter during your fellowship?

• Some of the challenges I have encountered during development are limited resources/information to get some tickets done. Eg mockups.
• Major API blockers especially those that have no documentation or available developers to reach out.

How did you overcome these challenges?

• Reaching out to my mentor and other stakeholders who know the right people who can unblock me.
• Pinging some devs and project managers on the ticket itself.

What did you learn from them?

• Incases of limited information or proper clarification on what is required, just do your best and wait for feedback.
• If possible post on Talk.

Achievements

What do you consider to be your top three achievements?

• Patient visit header. Though some part is not yet complete.
• Left Nav link active style fix.
• Appointments work.

What’s Next

Is there work remaining to be done for the project?

• Yes there are two more parts to include in the basic visit header, still waiting for the backend for that.
• Fellowship project.

What would you recommend as next steps for the project?

• Getting some API information for the appointments module.

What are your goals now?

• Do as much work as I can on appointments.
• Fix the appointments on the patient chart.

Reflections Until Now

How was your experience working with OpenMRS as a fellow?

• Great and challenging in a good way.

What did you enjoy/not enjoy?

• I enjoyed working on various frontend modules to get one ticket done, that was a new thing for me.
• Not knowing who to reach out for some requirements or even reaching out and someone doesn’t respond.

What can OpenMRS do to improve things for next time?

• Encourage all teams and squads to make documentations for their implementations/projects so that it is easy for other devs to onboard with little or no support.

• Continued to work on Appointments i.e the Appointments module and the home appointments.
• Writing some tests for some of the appointments implementation.

Exciting Fellowship Extension

I have worked on a lot of exciting stuff, but I will make a presentation for the 3 months up to December. Just to give a summary.

• Finishing up the feature for adding ability to mark a patient as deceased or alive
• CVD risk calculation for Cambodia/ South East Asia using the WHO dataset.
• Adding a new actionable component to our core framework.
• And many more

I can’t say I am the same as 6 months ago when I started this fellowship, I have learnt alot about best practices of a software engineer and also managed to understand a good part of the OpenMRS 3.o code.
