General Information Session

Welcome!

What is Jumpstart dual enrollment?

What is JumpStart?

JumpStart is the partnership between the HCPSS and HCC that provides opportunities for HCPSS students to earn college credits from HCC by taking courses at their high school or directly through HCC.

Certain courses in the HCC course catalog may be taken through Howard Community College for HCC Campus-Based college credit. Many of these courses count towards high school graduation and will appear on both transcripts.

Courses with a “CC” in the title can be taken at your high school for High School-Based college credit. These courses will appear on both transcripts if the student goes through the registration process to receive the college credit.

What does it mean to be a JumpStart Student?

  • Students have access to courses in their building and/or on campus.
  • Students are signing up for an authentic college experience.
    • Instructors will communicate directly with students through their myHCC account only
    • Attendance and strict attention to due dates are necessary for success
    • Self-advocacy and perseverance are imperative
  • Students have access to all services at HCC, such as tutoring and advising.
  • Students can still engage with their home high school for extracurriculars, services, and other courses. Athletes must take at least one class at their home high school or ARL.

Program Requirements

  • You must have a 2.0 unweighted cumulative GPA to participate in HCC Campus-Based courses.
  • Beginning in 2024-2025, there will be two sets of approved courses that students can access, depending on their progress in JumpStart. This will differ from previous years.
  • In order to qualify for free tuition, fees, and textbooks, students must adhere to the Approved Courses List(s) for which they are eligible. In addition, courses must be taken during the Fall, Winter, or Spring semesters to be covered under the JumpStart program. Students will be responsible for the full cost of enrollment for courses taken outside of these parameters.
  • Students who receive an NA, F, or W will not be able to continue with future coursework under the JumpStart umbrella without special permission.

Things to Consider

  • Enrolling in college courses is a process that takes time and effort on the student’s part. They may need to meet with an HCC advisor.
  • Courses offer college content at a college pace and may involve more and/or different work, mature themes, or different supports than students are used to, especially those taken on the HCC campus.
  • Accommodations for students with IEPs or 504s may be different on HCC’s campus and must be set up through HCC Disability Support Services prior to the start of the semester.
  • There can be major high school and/or college transcript implications based on course performance.

12 of 15

Transcript Implications

When taking a class on the HCC Campus, either virtually or in person, it is important to note:

  • Many approved classes are considered High School Equivalents and will be included on the high school transcript for all students. These courses will be weighted at highest equivalent course that HCPSS offers, with some exceptions.

*courses that are not on the approved lists or that are taken without meeting appropriate benchmarks will not be paid for by HCPSS

  • Other courses may only appear on the Howard Community College transcript, which could have implications for future college acceptances and/or employment. Please be sure that all courses are on an Approved Course list and that you meet the requirements to take the course under JumpStart program guidelines.*
