Meet The Artist
Hello! My name is Salem Heidi Clouse
I am both from and currently based in Northern Virginia (Fairfax). I just recently graduated with my BA in theatre with a double concentration in performance and design & tech from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.
I am the kind of artist that has the ambition to do it all. As well as props and scenic artistry, I engage in a wide range of theatre and film both behind the scenes and onstage/on camera. Since my involvement in theatre began, I always loved attending community theatre build days and helping with the paint and putting together little details to make the props great. I am a person who loves both organization and crafting, which is what makes scenic artistry and props so fulfilling for me.
Being able to make art is such a privilege. I do it for me, but I also do it for those who can't.

My Process - The Wall
The scenic designer, Myer Kim, had a vision to have an exterior NYC wall. After a bit of research, I went for the aesthetic of a dirty wall covered in posters and graffiti.

My Process - Set Deco
Photos by Myer Kim
In order to add to the chaos and clutter that New York City has, I was put in charge of making a maximalist set decoration to fill out the empty spaces in the set. When pulling from stock, I took into account the setting and references to the scenes/plot of the show.

How To Take Care of Your Flower
Props + Set Deco Fall 2024
My Process - Paint
This script was loaded with references, metaphors, and allusions to flowers and plants. To represent the growth the characters go through, I wanted to paint the platforms as though they were getting overtaken by moss and lichen.
To achieve this look, I used four different colors: a darker green, a lighter green, watered down shadow color, and a watered down highlight color. After mixing I took a sponge and creating layered splotches to give it it’s texture.
My Process - Chair Deco
The design of the chair platform was specific and deliberate. Lily has dream like therapy sessions with an inner self. To represent these two sides of the character, Lily’s chair stayed sharp and icy, with dead moss growing into vines with dead branches. This represented her struggle and general mood throughout the story. Her inner self, however is much more wholesome and cheerful. To represent this, I made the choice to cover her chair in white flowers surrounded with green moss. At the end of the show, she invites her boyfriend, Ethan, with a similar cheerful disposition.
My Process - Set Dressing/Deco
For Betsy’s Garden, I wanted a flower explosion. I am not exaggerating when I say that I used every single flower we had in our prop stock to cover this platform in flowers and plants of all kinds. I carefully adhered and adjusted where everything went, adding details like wind chimes and an open/close sign along the way.
I also put some of the vines, flowers, and other plants throughout the entire stage, ensuring no corner felt too empty.
For me, the set dressing is all about the small details. From the cozy blanket on the back of the couch to a watering can tucked in the garden. These are the things that make a great set feel lived in and believable.
Tech Theatre Class Final - Props Design and Budgeting Project: Hadestown
When I took a technical theatre class with props designer and technical director Lindsey Kelley, our final project was to choose a show to props design and budget for. Attached to this slide is a drive folder with all of those materials. It includes an mock build and labor budget, props presentation, and props tracking documents.

Scenic Paint
These are photos from my Buddha statue project during my scenic painting class. We were tasked with replicating the reference photo.
First I was tasked with gridding and sketching it out on paper. Then I moved on to the 5’x5’ flat where I made the same grid and cartooned it out. Finally I got to color mixing and painting.
Scenic Paint
Taking this inspo photo into account, I adjusted the design to better suit a large theatre and a square canvas
Scenic Paint
These are photos from my wood grain project during my scenic painting class. Each wood had a base color, grain color, and top color wash. 3 different techniques were used to achieve the 3 different grains
During a shift in my university’s scene shop, I was tasked with mimicking the texture of Patrick’s furniture items from the Spongebob cartoons. I used the top right photo as my reference, using a mix of spray paint and paint splattering.
