Description: The pandemic offered an opportunity for colleges to amplify the value of their online programs in order to increase student enrollment, success, and completion, while reducing equity gaps in those metrics. This is especially relevant for programs that shifted rapidly to online formats for the first time. The California Virtual Campus (CVC) offers an ever-growing set of free and low-cost @ONE courses, webinars, just-in-time help aids, and other resources to help California Community College faculty support online students more effectively. This includes research-based strategies and tools to improve online course design and online teaching. Using a case study format, we’ll share what colleges have done to improve student engagement and outcomes. Let us share how you can take your online programs and courses to the next level!

College of the Canyons built three online programs and improved one existing

program, to address regional workforce needs. We drew upon industry expertise to create Open Educational Resources (OER), resulting in Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) pathways for fields in which none currently exist.

The disciplines in which the online and ZTC programs were built are Architectural Computer Aided Drafting, Preschool Teacher, Land Surveying, and Water Systems Technology. The first three programs were not offered online prior to this project, nor did they fully employ OER. The fourth program, Water, was offered online and was built entirely around OER, providing students a full ZTC pathway.

As a result of this project, we improved the quality of existing online courses and created master online course shells. We followed the model of our successful Water program, which developed a ZTC pathway through original authorship that included strong engagement of industry professionals from across the state. Materials are openly licensed and available to all colleges to adopt and adapt, thereby supporting the training of qualified employees across the state.

We have adopted a number of @ONE courses and while we don’t have a local POCR process developed, my department (including myself) has been through the POCR training since we offer some course design support for faculty (we don’t have an instructional designer). Our faculty are aware of the course design rubric and we participated in the “Improving Online CTE Pathways Grant” that ended in 2020, so I can speak to how that grant enabled us to develop online and ZTC pathways for 4 of our CTE programs.

Improving CTE Online Programs grant allowed Imperial Valley College to create 6 fully online CTE programs. At IVC, we have a rigorous process for instructors to teach and create online courses. This is no different in the area of CTE. To prepare instructors for online teaching, we require that instructors complete @ONE’s Online Teaching & Design. This is a 12-week course that focuses on course design, interaction, assessment, and accessibility. Once our CTE instructors complete this course, they feel better prepared to create and teach online courses.

We also encourage all instructors who teach online to complete other @ONE courses such as 10-10-10 Communication that Matters, Assessment in Digital Learning, and Humanizing Online Teaching & Learning. All the courses that @ONE offers allow instructors to understand online pedagogy, being an online learner, and the importance of accessibility and regular effective contact. @ONE instructors are highly trained and are experts in online teaching and learning. Every course allows the learner to gain greater knowledge of online education.

IVC is a small college in a remote area. Having access to @ONE’s professional development has truly helped to shape our distance education program.
